A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Freckles is the only name he has ever known. His right hand is missing at the wrist, and he is haunted by not knowing how it happened. Raised since infancy in a Chicago orphanage, he speaks with a slight Irish accent and sings with a beautiful voice. Now, exhausted after many days of walking, he applies for a job with the Grand Rapids Lumber Company, guarding timber in the Limberlost Swamp from timber thieves. His Swamp Angel declares her love for him and promises that she will find his parents and prove that Freckles comes from "a race of men that have been gentlemen for ages."

Historia
Ghost stories date back centuries, but those written in the Victorian era have a unique atmosphere and dark beauty. Michael Sims, whose previous Victorian collections Dracula’s Guest (vampires) and The Dead Witness (detectives) have been widely praised, has gathered twelve of the best stories about humanity’s oldest supernatural obsession. The Phantom Coach includes tales by a surprising and often legendary cast, including Charles Dickens, Margaret Oliphant, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, and Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as lost gems by forgotten masters such as Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and W. F. Harvey. Amelia B. Edwards’s chilling story gives the collection its title, while Ambrose Bierce ("The Moonlit Road"), Elizabeth Gaskell ("The Old Nurse’s Story"), and W. W. Jacobs ("The Monkey’s Paw") will turn you white as a sheet. With a skillful introduction to the genre and notes on each story by Sims, The Phantom Coach is a spectacular collection of ghostly Victorian thrills.

Historia
The Voyage Out is Virginia Woolf's haunting tale about a naïve young woman's sea voyage from London to a small resort on the South American coast. In symbolic, lyrical, and intoxicating prose, her outward journey begins to mirror her internal voyage into adulthood as she searches for her personal identity, grapples with love, and learns how to face life intellectually and emotionally. Its wit and exquisiteness, and its profound depth and insight into humanity, will capture the imagination of the listener.

Jenny is the story of Jenny Winge, a talented Norwegian painter who lives a free and independent life in Rome. Betraying her own ideals, she has an affair, resulting in a child out of wedlock, and decides to raise the child on her own. Undset gives a gripping portrayal of a woman struggling towards fulfillment and independence, who at the same time wrestles with mental problems. It is written with unflinching honesty, which makes her story as compelling today as it was nearly a century ago.

A Reenergized Classic with a "Pearl" of a Voice!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Secret Garden to be better than the print version?
YES! Pearl Hewitt is an extraordinary artist. I am not one to reread books; once you know the ending, repeating the journey isn’t as engaging for me. However, when a classic favorite is produced on audio narrated by my favorite voice artist Pearl Hewitt, then I am very eager to repeat my experience. To HEAR the characters adds to their personality: Mary's youthful impertinence, well, let's say it...rudeness, but the softening in her manner can be "heard;" Martha the maid's soft tone--excellent Yorkshire? accent; the delightful children Dickon and Colin, each personality enhanced by Pearl's interpretation; and Mrs. Medlock...whoa, she's scary! Along with that to HEAR the emotions, to HEAR the joy, the fear, the delight...I was never able to 'read' it like that. Pearl gave me a renewed enjoyment...
What about Pearl Hewitt’s performance did you like?
Pearl Hewitt definitely enriched my experience with “The Secret Garden” making it like a new journey. Her artistry brings to life the various characters through her interpretation of their British accents: young Mary sounds different from the maid's son Dikon, Mrs. Medlock's and Martha Sowerby's attitudes can actually be heard. She is extremely talented to bring those characters to life...
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes...I am very familiar with the story, but Pearl's voice was mesmerizing. The emotions and characters were all so enjoyable...I couldn't put it down!
Any additional comments?
Pearl Hewitt narrates the Oxford Tearoom Mystery series by H.Y. Hanna. There are currently three books of a six-book series, and strangely...spooky even, as I read book 6 myself, I could hear Pearl in my head... It was good to say I had voices in my head. Pearl is excellent. I highly recommend listening to books she narrates.

Wonderful storytelling.
I love this book and have read it several times. Pearl Hewitt's narration is clear and expressive. Her investment in the story and the telling of it is obvious and I was drawn into the narration as if it were being read only for me. All the characters are drawn most believably and their feelings are never unclear in the way they speak. (her Yorkshire accent is particularly authentic). All in all it's a terrific rendering of a beautiful, classic story.

Timeless story, wonderful narration
This classic piece is lovely; the writing delightful and the narration captivating.
Pearl Hewitt absolutely made this story shine. Her narration is spot on, and most especially the parts that require a Yorkshire dialect. Her seamless narration is truly a treat to be savored. Pearl easily transitions between characters, allowing listeners to completely lose themselves in the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this version of Secret Garden. At first, I was unused to the use of music between chapters, but I found myself looking forward to it. It gave it a unique and timeless feel.
If you enjoy classics, this one will not disappoint!

Completely mesmerized by the narrators character voices.
What a beautiful classic but this narrator completely captivated me by the use of her character voices - so uniquely innocent and sweet! I was swept up in the story like none other I've heard. I will definitely listen to this one over and over and will look for more from Pearl Hewitt!
