About this listen

A female American spy in Nazi-occupied France finds purpose behind enemy lines in a novel of unparalleled danger, love, and daring by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Beantown Girls.

Anna Cavanaugh is a restless young widow and brilliant French teacher at an all-girls school in Washington, DC. Everything changes when she’s recruited into the Office of Strategic Services by family friend and legendary WWI hero Major General William Donovan.

Donovan has faith in her--and in all his “glorious amateurs” who are becoming Anna’s fast friends: Maggie, Anna’s down-to-earth mentor; Irene, who’s struggling to find support from her husband for her clandestine life; and Julia, a cheerful OSS liaison. But the more Anna learns about the organization’s secret missions, the more she longs to be stationed abroad. Then comes the opportunity: go undercover as a spy in the French Resistance to help steal critical intelligence that could ultimately turn the tide of the war.

Dispatched behind enemy lines and in constant danger, Anna is filled with adrenaline, passion, and fear. She’s driven to make a difference - for her country and for herself. Whatever the risk, she’s willing to take it to help liberate France from the shadows of occupation and to free herself from the shadows of her former life.

Completely Absorbing

Love, war, and spies! Loved every minute of it. So well-written I felt like I was there. My next listen will be by the same author. I love WW II books and this was one of the best. Although the heroine is almost a superwoman, Healey had me believing it all beginning to end. And I did not want it to end. It feels like if I googled the OSS, I would find Anna there right along with Donovan. A great listen!

Loved the character development, but found the reader a bit whiney.

I enjoyed the epilogue the most. The effort to align with history and feature women’s role in WW2 was beyond my expectations, but fascinating.

Fascinating story

This tale takes the reader into occupied France during WWII. Anna Cavanaugh is employed by General William Donovan founder and head of the OSS. This organization was the predecessor of the CIA. Anna volunteers to go overseas to wore as a wireless operator and spy in Paris.

I appreciate all the research that went into this novel. While a work of fiction, it was evident that many historical facts were woven deftly into the tale. For the most part, I was enthralled by the story. The one detraction for me was Anna's love life.

Nevertheless, the audio book was a pleasure to listen to and I came away wanting to know more of this period in our world's history.

Great story and narration

I really liked this one. I felt the romance was appropriate and not in your face, the historical figures were accurate and the narrator easy to listen to.

Great book! 📖 loved the narrator and the entire arc of the plot. The OSS and SOE have very fascinating stories.

Good story, not a great voice

It was difficult to finish listening to this quaking voice. Accents were all fine, but as the main character... brutal to listen to such a bold, brave woman shaking with every word throughout the entire story, no matter the mood.

Good story but…

The main character, Anna, had the flaws of too many modern stories. She’s selfish and headstrong, thinks she knows everything and needs constant compliments. The males are all weak and keep telling the women they’re so much smarter than themselves (ugh!). The morals are also too modern. Women of this class were expected to be virgins when they married and people didn’t just shrug off pregnancies by unmarried women. The story would have been better if had reflected the views of the time. And stop making the men so weak and apologetic.
