Publisher's summary

Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

read before Dr Sleep- diff from movie in good way

Read this before reading Dr Sleep after realizing how different the Shining movie was. Was pleased with the story, backstory, and ending. In the movie, the son Danny didnt seem to be the main character (overshadowed by Jack Nicholson I guess) but in the book Danny is the main protagonist and the character is much deeper.

Truly amazing

I had my doubts about the narrator at first, but he grew on me as things became more climatic. A wonderful book. Much better than the movie.

Best Audiobook I Have Ever Listen To

Hands down. Perfect. Campbell Scott's narration is just the right mix of eerie and poetic. This one is not to be missed!

Sublime story, super narration.

Perhaps I am biased having listened to George Guidall read several from The Dark Tower series; but Mr. Scott seems too monotone to me with very limited range. He is artuculate and reads at a good cadence, but personally the somewhat monotone delivery makes it difficult to truly enjoy.

perfectly ok.

I could've used a little more animation in the narrator. it really felt like he was holding back. the climax at the end was ruined with the whisper screams, which is really too bad. The story itself was good, but I will honestly say that for me the movie was better. sorry not sorry. both versions.

Loved it

Not the best narrator, but his low somber voice is perfect for this book.

I've seen the old movie, and I was surprised at how different it was from the book.

great book.

its Stephen King so whats to say about the writing. fantastic writing. believable characters, great horror, except... typical Stephen King ending. powerful evil falters in the presence of good because it hesitates or just can't seem to find the will and fails giving good the easy win. sometimes easier than others. at least this bad guy didn't just get hit in the head with a sock and crumble to the ground. you gotta love his writing all the same and give him some kudos for believing in the power of good to overcome evil, even though, in real life, it many times doesnt or cant.
