About this listen

The truth isn’t what it seems in this stirring novel of suspense.

After presenting a major scientific breakthrough to a rapt audience across the country, renowned astronomer Sarah Mayfield returns home to a disturbing discovery. Her husband, Ben, a Los Angeles restaurateur, has disappeared, leaving behind an unexplained bank deposit of a million dollars, a loaded Glock in the nightstand, and a video security system that’s been wiped clean. The only answers their son, Zack, can offer are the last words his father said to him: keep the doors locked and set the alarm.

Sarah’s marriage was more troubled than anyone suspected, but now she is afraid that her husband’s recent past could be darker than she dares to admit. Suspecting that nothing about Ben’s vanishing is what it seems, Sarah must delve into the space between old memories, newfound fears, and misleading clues to piece together the mystery of her husband’s disappearance - and find what she hopes in her heart is the truth.

Worst narration

The story was interesting enough, and I wanted to continue listening, but I think the narrator may have been an Android. The style of her reading might fit science fiction, but not fiction. Void of all emotions, no variation in intonation, read word for word like a person who has recently learned how to read. I would have enjoyed the book far more if I at least felt like the narrator was interested.

Distracting narrator

The storyline was excellent and absorbing. However, the excessively annoying. Her emphasis on over exaggerating and succinct narration was highly annoying and highly distracting from the story line. Her narration could be described as robotic.

Another Winner by Deet Meserve

I love this Author. Even the droll reading by Laurel Schroeder couldn’t take away from a wonderful story. Unfortunately the reader lacked the basic ability to perform the reading with effective modulation...varying pace, pitch and power...but rather read with what was a monotonous singsong. Meserve writes an enchanting story lit with hope amidst impossible evidence that it could be something else. Another satisfying work by this talented author. Bravo!

Way more than the description.

Great book. I really enjoyed the mystery of this one and what was going to happen and what was really happening! Worth a listen! My only complaint was there is another character that almost seems like he should have a bigger part in the book and is kind of randomly thrown in and then swept to the side. other than that great book :)

I was very disappointed in the uudible version

The story its self was interesting, and I grew to appreciate the main characters, however, the female narrator ruined the experience for me. She seems to have a speech impediment that detracted from the listening. The male narrator was softly spoken and represented the character of the male main character. I think the female narrator was a poor choice due to the impact of her ch endings to all words that ended in t: what became whatch, it became itch, airport became airportch, out became outch, and so many more that the longer I listened the more annoyed I became. I'm not sure that better mastering of the sound track would have helped. I will have to read the book now, to see if I can enjoy it to the fullest.

Good escapist story, though predictable

Effective fast-paced story, though fairly easy to figure out, especially considering the protagonist is a scientist. The narrator’s delivery was unfortunately a bit distracting.

Ruined by HORRIBLE narration

Could be a good story but the narration was so terrible I couldn’t finish it.

Predictable story, annoying narration

There are no surprising twists here. The story was just ok.... the problem was that the narrator has an annoying habit of placing too much emphasis on the ending of each word, especially for the last word of the sentence. Example: “word” sounds like word-duh. It drove me crazy!!

Horrible narration and story

Story was convoluted and hard to follow. The bad narration does not help with following the story.
