About this listen
Why do our families have so much power over us? In The Storm-Tossed Family, best-selling author Russell Moore (Onward, Christianity Today's 2016 "Book of the Year Award Winner") teaches listeners whether you are married or single, whether you long for a child or shepherding a full house, you are part of a family.
Family is difficult because family - every family - is an echo of the gospel. Family can be the source of some of the most transcendent human joy, and family can leave us crumpled up on the side of the road. Family can make us who we are, and family can break our hearts. Why would this social arrangement have that much power, for good or for ill, over us?

We are at war. Not with a foreign government or domestic terrorists or a creepy new artificial intelligence hell-bent on taking over the world. No, it’s a war we feel deep inside our own chests: we are at war with lies. The problem isn’t so much that we tell lies but that we live them. We let them into our bodies, and they sabotage our peace.

In The Meaning of Marriage, Timothy Keller, pastor of New York's Redeemer Presbyterian Church and bestselling author of The Reason for God, uses the scriptures as his guide to show readers what God's call to marriage is, and why this is such a powerful call.

If God is holy, then he can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then he can’t sin against you. If he can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make him the most trustworthy being there is? Best-selling author Jackie Hill Perry, in her much anticipated follow-up to Gay Girl, Good God, helps us find the reason we don’t trust God - we misunderstand his holiness. In Holier Than Thou, Jackie walks us through Scripture, shaking the dust off of “holy” as we’ve come to know it and revealing it for what it really is: good news.

What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace."

What's needed now, in shifting times, is neither a doubling down on the status quo nor a pullback into isolation. Instead we need a church that speaks to social and political issues with a bigger vision in mind: that of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Story
When we rewind history to Abraham's era, we encounter people who concocted false superstitions to explain the unexplainable. Powerful kings claimed to be gods, building massive pyramids in an attempt to achieve immortality. Out of this mass of misunderstandings, this collage of confusion, one man emerged. Why, thousands of years later, are we still discussing the faith of this desert nomad? Chuck Swindoll answers that question and many more in this compelling and insightful biography that will inspire your own faith.

Story
Author Jim Logan used to think spiritual warfare was a radical idea. That was before he realized just how real it was, especially in the lives of families. Moved by this discovery, in a 10-year span, he read over 400 books on spiritual warfare and counseled hundreds of families under satanic attack, soon emerging as a spiritual warfare expert. Reclaiming Surrendered Ground represents the insights gained in those years of study and ministry, and it contains the principles he turned to repeatedly in counseling families.

Story
We're facing an identity crisis. For decades our culture has tried to blur the lines between men and women, to make gender irrelevant, all in the name of equality. It’s a message that has slowly infiltrated our marriages, our homes, and even our churches. Yet instead of creating harmony, this message has only caused confusion, ultimately leading to a tragic breakdown of relationships and families. Divine Design calls us back to God’s original intent for men and women.

While a wonderful wedding day is important, it's the last day of marriage that really counts. Will the last day of your marriage come prematurely through divorce? Will it be filled with regrets as you sit at the funeral of your spouse? Or, by God's grace, will the last day be a time to rejoice in the life you lived together?

Each commandment asserts a principle, and each principle is a moral focus point for real-life issues relating to God, family, sex, work, charity, property, speech, and thought.

Story
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”

As the culture changes all around us, it is no longer possible to pretend that we are a moral majority. That may be bad news for America, but it can be good news for the church. What's needed now, in shifting times, is neither a doubling down on the status quo nor a pullback into isolation. Instead we need a church that speaks to social and political issues with a bigger vision in mind: that of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Biblical. Honest. Encouraging.
Such a great book.... Russell Moore does such a great job of speaking the truth of God’s scripture in love as he thoughtfully walks the listener through the real life struggles and realities of family. I would recommend this to anyone who takes their Christian faith seriously and wants to have a better understanding of our experience of family in light of being a part of God’s family.

Surprisingly helpful
I've had the hard-copy on my shelf for a couple years. The title put me off, because I thought it was just for a family in crisis. I was wrong. As I continued past the first couple chapters, the book became more and more intriguing, insightful, edifying, and relevant. Filled with Biblical truth and wisdom, the author puts into simple perspective the reality of God's involvement in our daily lives. I wish I would have read this book 10 years ago, though it did not even exist. I plan to listen through this one again. If you are reading this review, I highly recommend Storm Tossed Family to you!

Insightful
There are many gems in this work about being a spouse and parent. Had I read it 35 years ago my wife would have had a better husband and my children a better father. I used to think that other folks couldn't do a good job giving me books. No more. Thanks to my sister Bonnie for this wonderful Christmas present.

Difficult to get through
I think this book would be better reading than listening to be there were too many referenced scriptures and the story didn’t flow at all to me. It was constantly getting interrupted by scripture references which you wouldn’t read necessarily if you had the physical book. I couldn’t finish the book this way.
