Editorial reviews

It is the unyielding realism in the details of the story - of history, and of the ship on which this tale unfolds - that allows the grotesque and mythic twist in the tale's plot to remain believable. Jack Benson' s performance of this 50-minute audio is nuanced and engaging, if not at all dramatic. Listeners will be hard pressed to recall that author F. Marion Crawford was a 19th-century cosmopolitan Italian, given that The Upper Berth has the tone of an all-American seafaring adventure story.

Nautical Ghost Story-dun right

If you could sum up The Upper Berth in three words, what would they be?

Classic ocean ghost.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The doctor, for his almost cynical certainty.

Have you listened to any of Jack Benson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any other works read by him.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The spook factor here was delightful and chilling, in the classic, good old british ghost story way. I liked the odd familiarity developed by the crew with the patterns of the apparition. The opening periods were just delightfully familiar in their Jamesian comedy.

Any additional comments?

I wanted a nice spooky sea-faring yarn. This delivers.
