About this listen

From the bestselling author of When I’m Gone and Working Fire comes a gripping novel about a mother, her missing daughter, and the dark secrets that engulf them.

Ever since her husband’s death collided with the birth of her daughter, postpartum depression has taken hold of Veronica Shelton. She can’t sleep, can’t work, and can’t bear to touch her beautiful baby girl. Her emotional state is whispering lies in Veronica’s ear: You’re a bad mother. Your baby would be better off without you. But not everything can be reasoned away by Veronica’s despair. Can it?

After all, the break-in at her house happened. The disturbing sketches she found in her studio are real. So is the fear for her daughter’s safety—especially when Veronica comes home to a cold, silent nursery and a missing baby.

As she turns from victim into primary suspect, Veronica realizes that only she can find her daughter. Authorities aren’t helping. They’re only watching. Veronica’s concerned mother has suddenly vanished from her life. And a new friend seems to be keeping secrets from her too. Now, reality is waiting for Veronica in a dark place—because someone’s mind games have only just begun.

Made my commute enjoyable!

I liked this book quite a lot.
The positives are: (1) the twists and turns kept me interested; (2) the ending surprised me because I had a feeling about where it was going so I liked the unexpected twist; (3) the narrator’s voice is soothing and easy to listen to; and (4) the author’s description of the characters’ movements and personalities presented a clear picture of each.
The only negative I can articulate without spoiling the end is that there were a couple of minor confusing lack of tie-ups that left me with questions. I wanted a little more explanation about the protagonist Victoria’s mental state. We’ll leave it at that. All in all, I highly recommend this Audible book.

A fantastic story!

A great story. A page-turner with lots of twists and turns, sad but also inspiring for all and especially for women suffering with post partum depression and mothers who have lost a child. A must-read!

Mixed Feelings...Sometimes Great, Sometimes Ehhh

The different paces of this book made my head spin. It wasn't too difficult to figure out what was happening here. I felt for the main character and tried to imagine being that sick. Everything came together at the end and was about as happy as you could get for a story with so much sadness.

Twist on your usual physiological thriller

Really like this author and I have listened to a few of her books. I already know I will buy everything she has written;). The narrator also did a good job.

Amazing book

I wasn’t sure I would be so into this book. But I took the chance and to me it was worth it. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good listen/read.

Hard to get engaged

This book started off excruciatingly slow. I do not know if it was because of the book or the droning on of the narrator. I had to up the speed to 1.25 in order to not go crazy or give up. The first half of the book was quite dull. The second half picked up but still lacked a lot of plausibility.

A psychological Jigsaw puzzle

So, this book was pretty good with a lot of plot twists that make you roll your eyes, gasp and shake your head. I will say that it was overly detailed in my opinion, which made it a very slow read. Everything was drug from here to eternity to get to the point. If you're not impatient like I am, then you may enjoy it more, but overall, it was a good, suspenseful, psychological jigsaw.
