Publisher's summary

In this gripping WWII time-slip novel from the author whose books have been called “propulsive” and a “must-read” (Publishers Weekly), Grace Tonquin is an American Quaker who works tirelessly in Vichy France to rescue Jewish children from the Nazis. After crossing the treacherous Pyrénées, Grace returns home to Oregon with a brother and sister whose parents were lost during the war. Though Grace and her husband love Élias and Marguerite as their own, echoes of Grace’s past and trauma from the Holocaust tear the Tonquin family apart.

More than 50 years after they disappear, Addie Hoult arrives at Tonquin Lake, hoping to find the Tonquin family. For Addie, the mystery is a matter of life and death for her beloved mentor Charlie, who is battling a genetic disease. Though Charlie refuses to discuss his ties to the elusive Tonquins, finding them is the only way to save his life and mend the wounds from his broken past.

a little disappointed

the sample starts with the story beginning in 1943 France during world war II. I was intrigued but then disappointed when most of the story did not take place during world war II.
it's a heartwarming story with the language is a little too flowery for my taste.
also, I'm not a very religious person so the religion in the story was a bit much for me.
I would give it three and a half Stars if I could but the app only allows whole numbers :-)

Too long.

I gave this story 4 stars instead of 5 because it went on too long.

An exquisite story all around!

Another unforgettable WWII split time novel from one of my favorite authors. Raw, honest characters who sacrificed for others and learned to rely on God’s strength and guidance. Heartbreaking yet uplifting. I’ll be thinking about this beautiful story for a long time. I already miss the characters. And I’m always encouraged in my faith by one of Dobson’s novels. Great narration too.

A Must Read

The will to survive, the ability to forgive, and the need for redemption will keep you listening to end and then wanting more. Melanie Dodson does a wonderful job of making you feel so many emotions.

Meh

Story very predictable. More in present, then historical. Didn’t care for narrator. I am Christian, but found this book very preachy.

story would be better with less Jesus

I generally liked the story, but found there was too much talk about Jesus, especially in a book that was about saving Jewish children. I didn't look at the reviews before I purchased the book, but I guess that I should have. It's a bit bothersome to be saving Jewish children but then not honor their religion when you continue to raise them...

Enjoyed this book, and how the family came together . Also appreciate the Christian aspects of the story.

Another wonderfully weaved story

Melanie Dobson did a beautiful job leaving another story. I love the style that she writes in since I’ve read most of her books. This is one of my favorites. It goes up with catching the wind. I would love if there was a way to get copies of this book without as much of the religion portion into it, because it would be really fun to teach the story of Charlie and Marguerite in school.

The Winter Rose

This is a character driven book. It’s one you feel like you’re leaving friends behind as it ends. Christian values are always refreshing and redemptive.
