Publisher's summary

The Sunday Times bestseller following the inspiring story of life as a shepherdess, by the star of More4's Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive & the Kids and Channel 5’s Our Yorkshire Farm.

Amanda Owen has been seen by millions on ITV's The Dales and Channel 5's Our Yorkshire Farm, living a life that has almost gone in today's modern world, a life ruled by the seasons and her animals. She is a farmer's wife and shepherdess, living alongside her husband Clive and seven children at Ravenseat, a 2000 acre sheep hill farm at the head of Swaledale in North Yorkshire. It's a challenging life but one she loves.

In The Yorkshire Shepherdess she describes how the rebellious girl from Huddersfield, who always wanted to be a shepherdess, achieved her dreams. Full of amusing anecdotes and unforgettable characters, the book takes us from fitting in with the locals to fitting in motherhood, from the demands of the livestock to the demands of raising a large family in such a rural backwater. Amanda also evokes the peace of winter, when they can be cut off by snow without electricity or running water, the happiness of spring and the lambing season, and the backbreaking tasks of summertime – haymaking and sheepshearing – inspiring us all to look at the countryside and those who work there with new appreciation.

Bring the outdoors inside!

The author couldn’t have chosen a more perfect narrator. It really sounded like an authentic reading, with the accents and heartfelt delivery bringing the story to life. I love being outdoors so while cooped up inside in this cold and damp weather I felt I was able to bring the outdoors in and I could even imagine deeply breathing in the fresh, country air. The author’s personal journey towards fulfilling her dream of becoming a shepherdess was a long and convoluted one, teleporting her out of urban punk into wholesome farm life. And don’t get me started on her remarkable reproductive biology!!! Well worth every minute of your time. As always when a good book ends, I feel bereft for a while. But it’s good to know she can be found in other works, including on the television screen. If you love animals and family life and old fashioned living, then I highly recommend this audiobook.

Brilliant I Want to Read More!

I couldn't stop. As a shepherdess myself I could easily relate. Her story is remarkable, she's brave, traditional, brilliant, creative, and a heroine all in one. Her life experience was remarkable. Such determination to follow her passion and have such courage!!!

Great audiobook

I was hesitant to start this but ended up loving it and the series. I had just finished the all creatures great and small series and was looking for something that would be full of heartwarming stories and adventures. This is a great listen and has two books after that continue the journey. I highly recommend this series to listeners who like short stories and animals.

Absolutely delightful!

I felt like I was a part of a life I always wanted, living in a remote northern area farming sheep and cows with the man I love, having babies with reckless abandon, roaming the moors with my Border Collie at my side. Amanda you gave me a beautiful fantasy. I have a sheep farm that I love, but you have done it on a grand and fantastic scale and I am totally enthralled with your farming and your family. Please don't stop. I know you are incredibly busy with book tours and television shows but do come home to the farm and write more!

Owen is a great example feminine strength

Amanda Owen shares her experience of becoming a shepherdess from the spark of the dream, through realization of her dream, and continuation in the next generation. Climbing the snowy hills with bales of hay for the sheep and a baby strapped to her back. She is a great example feminine strength. She shares the highs and lows she has experienced through her families eyes and moves the reader to laugh and cry along her journey.

Her descriptions transport you to her family farm and stories provide enough background so that even the most citified readers feel at home listening. I enjoyed this book so much, I couldn't wait to start the sequel.
