Publisher's summary

Christmastime in an isolated country house and, following a flaming row in the kitchen, there’s murder inside.

When a much disliked visiting servant disappears without trace after playing Santa Claus, foul play is at once suspected - and foul play it proves to be. Only suspicion falls not on the staff but on the guests, all so unimpeachably respectable that the very thought of murder in connection with any of them seems almost heresy.

When Superintendent Roderick Alleyn returns unexpectedly from a trip to Australia, it is to find his beloved wife in the thick of an intriguing mystery....

Another good one

Another good Alleyn mystery, where the murder comes quite late. Enjoyable and well narrated by Saxon.

Characters are so interesting and overly dramatic!!!

Crazy characters. Perplexing story. Twist of an ending. Different for Marsh for sure. Not your typical Christmas story!!!

Quirky characters/wonderful narration

Ngaio Marsh is one of my favorite Golden Age writers and one of the Queens of the period. This one is not from the Golden Age, but one of her later works. Still terrific. While the puzzle is not terribly complex; the characters; esp. Aunt Bed & Uncle Flea and an assortment of one off murderers who comprise the household staff make for an entertaining story. James Saxon could read the yellow pages and make them interesting. SPOILER: always a bonus when the most annoying character is the killer.
