Publisher's summary
When too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.
Delightfully aided by the perfect comedic timing of narrator Steven Crossley, To Say Nothing of the Dog shows once again why Connie Willis is one of the most talented writers working today.

Story
When level-headed Francie arrives in Roswell, New Mexico, for her college roommate’s UFO-themed wedding—complete with a true-believer bridegroom—she can’t help but roll her eyes at all the wide-eyed talk of aliens, which obviously don’t exist. Imagine her surprise, then, when she is abducted by one. Odder still, her abductor is far from what the popular media have led her to expect, with a body like a tumbleweed and a mass of lightning-fast tentacles. Nor is Francie the only victim of the alien’s abduction spree.

The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Story
In 1889, satirist Jerome K. Jerome fully intended to write a serious travel guide when he and his two best friends embarked on a boating trip up the river Thames to Oxford. But his musings on landmarks and local history were soon hijacked by his own digressive, waggish voice. And so, what began as a peaceful and edifying two-week exploration soon floated upriver into farce - aided, quite naturally, by a portly ration of cheese, some very bad weather, and a dog named Montmorency.

The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pulitzer Prize-winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter". His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures.

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Story
For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

Story
It is 1940. France has fallen, and only a narrow strip of sea lies between Great Britain and invasion. The war could go either way, and everyone must do their bit. Young copywriter Catrin Cole is drafted into the Ministry of Information to help write women into propaganda films - something that the men aren't very good at. She is quickly seconded to the ministry's latest endeavor: a heartwarming tale of bravery and rescue at Dunkirk. It's all completely fabricated, of course, but what does that matter when the nation's morale is at stake?

Story
A psychologist specializing in near-death experiences, Dr. Joanna Lander has spent two years recording the experiences of those who have been declared clinically dead and lived to tell about it. A new doctor has arrived at Mercy General, one with the power to give Joanna the chance to get as close to death as anyone can. Dr. Richard Wright has come up with a way to manufacture the near-death experience using a psychoactive drug. Dr. Wright is convinced that the NDE is a survival mechanism and that if only doctors understood how it worked, they could someday delay the dying process.

Story
Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by English writer Jerome K. Jerome of a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Kingston. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel.

There are four of them - George, Harris, the writer himself and that dog, Montmorency - all participants in a boating expedition on the Thames. The difficulties and vicissitudes heaped upon these innocents develop to epic proportions as they experience the hazards of the great English waterway. Their problems are in no way diminished by the outrageous behaviour of Montmorency, who lays waste several riverside communities in the course of their journey.

Clever and interesting. Excellent narrator. Connie Willis imagines a time-travel story to multiple places and times with such charm and wit that you almost certainly will want to read it again immediately after finishing just to catch all the clever details you might have missed the first go round. Willis + Crossley = Wonderful
I have read this book several times, and found it hilariously funny, if sometimes tiresomely redundant (which I think is on purpose, as part of the plot). But I've never enjoyed it as much as listening to Stephen Crossley's narration. His characters' voices were absolutely perfect. I'll look for more audio books by him.

A little hard to follow but lots of fun.
I enjoyed the book a lot. The narration is fantastic, but the narrative was hard for me to follow. Who did what to whom and when and how that that affect the other thing to what effect on something else and then another thing and when? Like that. But it's a great book.

Charming
This was a fun and engaging listen. The plot is well put together, the characters are delightful and the narrator does a great job adding a little dash of extra humor on top.
I didn't find it as powerful as Doomsday Book, but of course that was never the point. This one gets into more of the quirks and wrinkles of the notion of time travel (something I must admit not being very good at following, so perhaps my "well put together" comment should include the caveat that any time-travel plot holes would likely escape me) and into a very sweet relationship story which adds a nice charm to the story without ever becoming the story itself. With all of that, I can see even more clearly in this book than in Doomsday Book where Jodi Taylor must have found the seed for her delightful St. Mary's tales.

The humor in this tale would keep me coming back even without the spectacular performance of the narrator, but how he brings it all to life is simply perfection. This is without doubt one of the best audible purchases ever; I cannot recommend it highly enough. Love it!

Loved this book. It was my second book by Connie Willis. The author created an original story yet again based on time travel. I found the performance excellent. I couldn’t wait to sit and listen until I sadly finished. I will listen to another one as soon as I can.

Catholics only
The author assumes the reader is very familiar with Catholicism. Even being raised in a Christian society didn’t prepare me to understand many aspects of this story. If you’re unfamiliar with or dislike Catholicism, skip this book.
BUT it if that is your cup of tea, the time-travel portion of this story is engaging with a new take on the “mechanics” of it all.
