About this listen

It was an unprovoked attack, a deliberate act of aggression. When Vice Admiral Mike Brannon of the US Navy received word that the wreck of the Sharkfin had been found, with a gaping hole in its stern, he could only conclude that the Soviets had, without warning, attacked and destroyed a US nuclear submarine. He could not let the incident pass without retaliation. Yet whatever steps he took, he risked leading the two superpowers into a state of war. If he informed the president, it might take weeks for Congress to take action - too long. Whatever response was to be made, it had to be made decisively and immediately. Harry Homewood presents a novel of mounting tension, a story of today's naval superpowers locked in a deadly battle that brings an unknowing world to the brink of nuclear holocaust.

Outstanding Realism

The realism is fantastic. It could have actually happened and been done behind closed doors. The author should be put on a pedestal as an example of how to write a realistic thriller.

A good nuclear submarine techno thriller

This is a good book but pales in comparison to the previous 2 in this series. It struck me as odd to jump so far forward for the third novel from the WW2 Pacific setting of the previous 2. There is quite a bit of Clark and dagger style cold war spy stuff going on and although I am a fan of that it just seemed like too much of a departure for this series.

All 3 Books were great

Being retired from the US Navy I have a very difficult time finding authors who can keep my attention when they don’t know what they’re writing about. I read all 3 of his Submarine series and it kept my attention until the end.

Having served during the Cold War there were quite a few 4 striped officers just like Captain Steel

The technical details

The technical details expressed in this book was quite interesting to me. I look forward to another book from him.

Well done Mr. Homewood, Great story!

Plot stretched the imagination a bit, however if you don't hold that one point against the book you have an interesting game of chess of politics between two nations.

Not Much Submarine Action

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really. I expected to hear a story about submarine combat, but instead got global politics and palace intrigues.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Was that IT?

Any additional comments?
Harry Homewood's WW2 sub books are worthy, UNlike this one.

Gripping

This is the last book of a trilogy about submarines. Unlike most of Homewood’s books which were about World War II submarines, this book is about the Cold War. Homewood is well educated about the Silent Service and has written many books on the subject. But I felt the plot of this story was a bit unrealistic; that being said, I did enjoy the book. I found it to be exciting and loaded with action and suspense.

The book is six hours and twenty-eight minutes. Corey M. Snow does a good job narrating the book. Snow is a full-time audiobook narrator.

Loved the WWII books, this not so much.

I really enjoyed the two WWII books. I didn’t realize this was more modern nuclear navy. Actually started and stopped and read another series before coming back. I got through it and it was ok but nothing special.
