Joanna Gore travels to Smicksburg, Pennsylvania under false pretenses. She has been corresponding with an Englisher for over a year. Are they marriage material? She definitely wants to leave the Amish, no doubt about it. The Amish of Smicksburg are more primitive than the Beachy Amish, so no worries about being sucked into their lifestyle. She’ll be the new teacher at the one-room schoolhouse and stay until Christmas, seeing snow for the first time. Joanna meets a host of characters, including Granny and Jeb Weaver, and her life twists and turns until she is dizzied enough to fall on her knees and realize: A person may have many ideas concerning God’s plan for his life, but only the designs of God’s purpose will succeed in the end.
