This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. Having inspired a classic film and Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny is Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life—and mutiny—on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater. It was immediately embraced upon its original publication as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of the Second World War. In the intervening half century, this gripping story has become a perennial favorite, selling millions throughout the world, and claiming the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Historia
The USS Seawolf was one of the greatest submarine raiders of all time. Having narrowly avoided the attack on Pearl Harbor the Seawolf set out for the seas of the Pacific to wreak havoc on Japanese shipping. Joseph Melvin Eckberg was on the Seawolf from her maiden voyage and remained with her until January 1943. As chief radioman he was instrumental in assisting Captain Frederick Warder to find and destroy enemy targets. From the claustrophobia of being trapped under water and the overwhelming fear of depth charges to the joys of aiding the war-effort and the camaraderie on the ship.

Drawing on historical documents and contemporary accounts and on exclusive interviews with Carlsen's family, Delaney opens a window into the world of the merchant marine. With deep affection, and respect, for the weather and all that goes with it, he places us in the heart of the storm, a "biblical tempest" of unimaginable power. He illuminates the bravery and ingenuity of Carlsen and the extraordinary courage that the 37-year-old captain inspired in his stalwart crew.

Historia
First published in 1970, nine years after Hemingway's death, this is the story of an artist and adventurer, a man much like Hemingway himself. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, from his experiences as a painter on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. Hemingway is at his mature best in this beguiling tale.

One of the great adventure novels of our language creates a most engaging central character, Nostromo. A picturesque man of action and popular hero, Nostromo lives to be "well-spoken of" by the citizens of Costaguana, the mythical South American banana republic where the story takes place. Around this figure, Conrad spins a story of revolution, politics, and racial conflict as complex as Nostromo, the man whose greatest enemy is himself.

Delightful!
Story: 5 stars
This story was just a delight! Neville Shute truly knew how to weave a tale!
I can’t tell you how many times I broke into a spontaneous smile or erupted into a small laugh during the course of the story!
Narration: 5 stars
Excellent accents all around! I heard some subtle differences in American accents, a number of different British accents, and a Scottish accent. Mr. Mullet rather briskly and matter-of-factly read the narrative parts, but the spoken lines were read with feeling. I thought it was a good choice in how to handle the narrative! I would listen to this voice actor again and look forward to it!

Great escape!
What made the experience of listening to Trustee from the Toolroom the most enjoyable?
it's a story with a happy ending after some turns and twists.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Trustee from the Toolroom?
The 28 day voyage of the main character by sloop from Hawaii to Tahiti
Which character – as performed by Frank Muller – was your favorite?
Keith, the main character.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Made me happy! Such a wonderful story, almost a fairy tale.
Any additional comments?
Nevil Shutes books provide great escape. As all of his books I have read, they have interesting settings in far away countries with a cast of characters you enjoy meeting. There is a gentleness and heart to his stories, which makes me come back to him as an author over and over.

Lovely and well written in and for gentler time.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I was immediately invested in all the characters. The narrator did a bang-up job with the voices and the story was delightful and courageous.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Keith, absolutely. Such an unwavering moral compass in a man who has almost no opinion of himself.
Have you listened to any of Frank Muller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I will!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
That's not my favorite thing to do. I like to stop in the middle of a really good part and go do something. That allows me to look at what's happening from a lot of different angles. I often remember hearing things that went right into my subconscious as unimportant but upon further examination - they come more to the surface to play an important part in what's happening.
