About this listen

An inspiring memoir from the frontlines of history by the award-winning 60 Minutes correspondent.

Don’t ask the meaning of life. Life is asking, what’s the meaning of you?

With this provocative question, Truth Worth Telling introduces us to unforgettable people who discovered the meaning of their lives in the historic events of our times.

A 60 Minutes correspondent and former anchor of the CBS Evening News, Scott Pelley writes as a witness to events that changed our world. In moving, detailed prose, he stands with firefighters at the collapsing World Trade Center on 9/11, advances with American troops in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, and reveals private moments with presidents (and would-be presidents) he’s known for decades. Pelley also offers a resounding defense of free speech and a free press as the rights that guarantee all others.

Above all, Truth Worth Telling offers a collection of inspiring tales that reminds us of the importance of values in uncertain times. For listeners who believe that values matter and that truth is worth telling, Pelley writes, "I have written this book for you."

This is the most important book of our time

Scott Pelley's immaculate prose and directive is more transformative than solely informative. Anyone questioning his or her purpose in society should not necessarily become a journalist, but should consume the most important book of our time for its Truth Worth Telling.

Another Walter Cronkite

Truth Worth Telling by Scott Pelley is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Keep giving us the truth.

Between Good and Average

3.5 stars. Most of the negative reviews claim left leaning political bias- that is not true. This is a balanced assessment of several issues and people. It is anti-Trump, but Trump is a person- not a party or a political philosophy. It is also anti-Bill Clinton, but none of the reviews claim it is too far right.

Not five stars because some of the chapters are not as interesting. More often, the stories are well told and informative. The conclusion is excellent and probably should have been reflected in the introduction better. It might have put more readers into the correct frame of mind.

Worth a listen unless you don’t like to hear the truth- which unfortunately is a LOT of people.

I would give it 6 stars if I could.

At a time when our media is under constant attack for supporting whichever agenda the attackers oppose, this is a refreshing inside story of many of the major events of our times. Scott had a seat at the table behind closed doors, and shares insights and wisdom on such an array of events, from 9/11 to the OKC Bombing to the Clinton affair and Iraqi wars.

Wonderful storytelling.

History worth reading

Pelley makes history come alive. He paints a scene with his words and narration. The book is like a philosophical dissertation told in a conversational mode. A must read in every regard.

Simply, one of the best books I have ever read.

Masterfully told. Pelley’s narration of his own book was pitch perfect. His stories were beautifully crafted and emotionally touching. His insistence on really telling the truth captivated me. After listening and reading this book, I believe Pelley has become what he aspired to be as a young journalist under the tutelage of his CBS mentors...in my opinion, he is the most trustworthy journalist in America.

A Class Act

People, not politics. That simple sentence sums up Scott Pelley and what he is about. Every story he tells focuses is how the individual(s) were personally affected and its impact on the American people. Not to mention, he constantly goes out of his way to give credit to his colleagues behind the scenes that made each story possible. You would think he was a no-talent floating head by how incredibly humble he is, but that is obviously not the case.

Truth Worth Telling reads like a series of extended 60 Minutes segments, which is a very good thing. Mr. Pelley takes us through the most important events which he has covered in the last 30 years and, with the benefit of hindsight, gives a thorough overview of each. He never avoids the difficult stories or moments, which he always approaches head-on with kindness and humility (the chapters on 9/11, Nadia Murad and Sandy Hook are especially heart-wrenching). Throughout the book his dry wit and self-depreciating humor bring many lighter moments to otherwise difficult stories. I can count the books that made me both laugh out loud and cry on one hand, and this is one of them.

This book is a no-brainer for any fans of Mr. Pelley on 60 minutes or the CBS Evening News, which he anchored from 2011-2017. It really is a fantastic (although difficult at times) listen from start to finish. I'm not by any means patriotic, but Mr. Pelley makes me proud to be an American both by his love for his country and the fact that there are people like him in it who can make such a difference. Highly recommended.

Amazing!

I absolutely loved this book. I've already given a copy to other family members. It is well written. The first chapter on 9-11 had me in tears. Stories about soldiers were somber and moving. I will be listening to this again!
