Publisher's summary

In the near future, lab-grown sex dolls are the pleasure toy of choice in this disturbing and provocative short story from Lauren Beukes, the bestselling author of The Shining Girls.

Actor and sex worker Nats is experienced at putting on a show. However, her new gig supplying intimate whispers for growgirls takes her to a place darker and lonelier than she could have ever imagined. The lab-grown dolls can respond to pleasure or pain; their synthetic heads contain only the simplest AI to prevent any pesky robo sex doll uprisings. But just because growgirls don’t have a brain, doesn’t mean they don’t have a voice...

Ungirls is part of Disorder, a collection of six short stories of living nightmares, chilling visions, and uncanny imagination that explore a world losing its balance in terrifying ways. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single disorienting sitting.

Confused

Seemed like a good story and maybe I wasn’t paying as close attention as I thought but I found the story confusing. A lot of jumping back and forth between characters and time. Not sure where the robot stuff came in or why.

Could Use Work

This could use a rewrite and it would be better as a novel instead of a short story.

A cautionary tale...

A quick cautionary tale about people relying on sex toys/robots to satisfy their needs in lieu of actually interacting with and having relations with real people. A good read indeed.

Too Believable

Toxic masculinity, from three different angles. Artificial human parts turn into a side-business for artificial human sex toys. Real live sex-workers see their lives being ruined by the judgments of "society", including their customers.

This takes place in the near future, but it's a future we can all see from where we're standing.

Realistic future of sex dolls

Contains spoilers:

The incel talk was pretty realistic, Reddit can be a cesspool and the men on ~certain~ subreddits absolutely say these types of things and think women "we" them sex or relationships for basically existing.
Even the doxing of the sex worker was realistic. It was however just a bit confusing around the emailing section and when the non-human girl was dismembered. Had to rewind to get it straight.
Overall i enjoyed it!

Another Winner

Lauren Beukes continues to be one of my faves and a great voice in speculative fiction.

Ungirls, unlike anything I have heard.

Truthfully, I didn't care for this story at all, I became confused by the excessive amount of characters and there situations.

Dark and dangerous

this story is very dark and should come with a trigger warning for anyone who has ever been cyberstalked or who has been outed
