Publisher's summary

In this sweeping saga, three Swedish sisters endure an 1890s Atlantic crossing, an Ellis Island detention, and various other trials as they struggle to find love, faith, and home.

First came their mother's death. Then their father's suicide. For orphans Elin, Kirsten, and Sofia, life stretches on like an endless winter. When circumstances become unbearable, they write their Chicago relatives, desperate for a safe haven. Soon the three find themselves among the huddled masses bound for America - the promised land of dreams and second chances. Yet amidst the hardships of their journey, these brave young ladies determine to let nothing stop them from reaching a place they can call home.

Great read

I can imagine what my great grandparents went through when they came from Europe thru Ellis Island. This story came alive.

The Story is Good

The story is good, as is anything that comes from Lynn Austin. However I struggled to enjoy the narration. The narrator made 16 year old Sophia sound like a 12 year old. Not necessarily the pitch of her voice, but the "attitude" behind it. The words she speaks did not have to be portrayed that way.

Great story as usual from Lynn Austin.

It was a great story as I have come to expect from Lynne Austin, and the performance by Ruth Ann Phimister was well done, but I have a hard time listening to her voice– – It just seems too old for such young girls as the characters were. I just think that her voice would be better suited to older characters.

The beauty of words

The ending was beautiful. The sisters love was incredible for one another and others too.

Loved the story

I enjoyed the story of hardship and perseverance of these young Swedish immigrants. The only thing I wish was different was the narrators voice- she sounded too old . But overall I enjoyed it and I could still enjoy the story.
