Story
Welcome to Haven Hollow, a town of monsters. After dating a string of losers and banishing a poltergeist, I packed up my Los Angeles life and my 11-year-old son, and moved...to a town in Oregon with a population of 680. Well, 682 now. Culture shock anyone? Ahem, never mind that.... New starts can happen anywhere, right? I hope so, because I need to start the next chapter of my 43-year life pronto. So, why Haven Hollow? For one reason - there aren’t any witches here. And a witch can make a gypsy’s life...complicated. Oh, right, I’ve put the cart before the horse.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

A very average series...
I listened to the entire series in hopes that the author would develop the characters, world and story better, since I found the concept of a Vampire in a domestic setting intriguing. Although the series continues to keep some interesting concepts, the story doesn't get better or worst.
The author continues to make the same mistakes throughout the entire series. The mystery is very predictable. Samantha doesn't act as a mother in many situations or like a former federal agent, or even like a regular woman, and keeps making poor decisions that could easily expose her "secret" vampirism to strangers. Also all other characters in the series are kept one dimensional.
For some reason the author also seems to be going with the "extraordinary and most powerful" route for Samantha's character. She is now developing all kinds of psychic abilities that allow her to "know" everything by touching objects, talking to ghosts, listening to her "inner alarm" or by communicating with old spirit, etc. These abilities apparently are not developed by all vampires. Although it is somewhat interesting to have a psychic vampire, at the same time its also very anticlimactic and convenient to have her find out everything so easily.
I suspect that many of the issues I find with this series are related to the shortness of each book. I have no idea why the author creates such short stories but by doing so he really hampers the character development and the flow of the story.
Nonetheless the series is somewhat interesting and the author has a different concept going (psychic vampire investigator and mother of two kids). This series may not win any awards but its still mildly entertaining.

great story
This is a fun and witty story about things that go bump in the night. Add in a great detective mystery story and this is a hit. This is one of my favorites books. The narrator really brings a lot to this book that is perfect for the different characters. Can't wait to jump right into the next one. Very highly recommended.

Fun take
"Vampire for Hire" is a fun take on the vampire craze. I've enjoyed both novels in the series so far and will continue on with the series. Our hero is a working single mom who happens to be an ass-kicking vampire. Very fun. I actually enjoyed this book more than the 2nd in the series. My only complaint is the narrator. She is strangely monotone. I would listen to the sample just to make sure that you could enjoy her telling. I recommend it if you are looking for something light and entertaining.

Sophomore book better than first
If you read the first book in series and were in the fence considering the next book, like me, I highly recommend reading this. The authors writing style has definitely improved. I feel like the characters are developing a bit better this go around and I truly believe each book will get better. I'm still not a fan of the immaturity of the characters. They are grown adults that are written more like children. Or maybe someone without much life experience. I get this is fantasy, you can only have so much experience to pull from when writing. But, I still see much room for improvement with the characters. I have already purchased the 3rd book in this series and plan to continue.
