Ein Hühnchen und ein Hähnchen suchen Nüsse. Eigentlich hatten sie abgemacht, dass, wenn einer eine fände, er den anderen rufen würde, um die Nuss gemeinsam zu essen. Das Hühnchen findet einen großen Nusskern, frisst ihn alleine und droht daran zu ersticken. Es bittet das Hähnchen, ihm Wasser zu bringen. Das besorgt mit einigen Problemen das Wasser, in der Zwischenzeit ist das Hühnchen allerdings schon erstickt. Vor Trauer schreit das Hähnchen, dass alle Tiere des Waldes zusammenkommen. Auf einem Wagen soll das Hühnchen zu Grabe getragen werden. Dem Trauerzug schließen sich die Tiere des Waldes an. An einen Bach gekommen, wollen die Tiere diesen mit Hilfe eines Strohhalmes überqueren. Es scheitert und die Mäuse, die die Kutsche bis dahin gezogen haben, ertrinken. Als Nächstes will eine Kohle bei der Überquerung helfen, erlischt aber im Wasser. Schließlich hilft ein Stein als Brücke aus. Das Hähnchen überquert mit dem Leichnam des Hühnchens das Wasser. Der Wagen war mittlerweile allerdings von den anderen Tieren des Waldes so schwer geworden, dass er in den Bach zurück stürzt und alle Tiere des Waldes ertrinken. Am Ende hat es nur das Hähnchen mit dem toten Hühnchen auf die andere Bachseite geschafft. Dort beerdigt das Hähnchen das Hühnchen und trauert so lange um die Verstorbene, bis es selbst stirbt.
