Epic read!
Saw the movies in the seventies which was a major event. Remembered it well so I thought I would listen to the book. Battle scenes detail can be slow but the historical reflections and facts are very interesting and the Henry family adventures keep you riveted.

We Must Remember
The author does a tremendous job weaving the fictional drama with historical fact. The drama helps to invest your attention in the lives of a handful of characters so as to pay attention to the history. He does not sugarcoat the atrocities inflicted on more than 50million Jewish people from all over the world. He is very matter of fact about very disturbing episodes.
He explains complicated political power plays extremely well.
The language he uses and the stereotypes to describe women and people of certain ethnicities is horrific, yet most likely the reality of the 40s-60s. That took some getting used to.
Reading this novel is a course of study in WWII while watching a soap opera. It is a worthy endeavor.

Well worth the time!
