Publisher's summary
Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. There he meets the freaks, grifters, and misfits that populate this world. Jacob introduces us to Marlena, beautiful star of the equestrian act; to August, her charismatic but twisted husband (and the circus' animal trainer); and to Rosie, a seemingly untrainable elephant.
Beautifully written, with a luminous sense of time and place, Water for Elephants tells of love in a world in which love's a luxury few can afford.

Story
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Story
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

After watching my mother succumb to a mysterious illness, I promised myself two things. I'd find the cure for what ravaged her and leave the godforsaken city where she abandoned me. Four years later, I received an acceptance letter from Dracadia University, one of the oldest most prestigious schools in the country. Nestled on a secluded island off the coast of Maine, it's rumored to be haunted by the souls of the mental patients exiled there centuries before, those whose bones are said to make up the island's white sandy shores. And restless ghosts aren't even its most daunting peculiarity.

Just couldn't stop listening. I read this the old fashioned way (well, on Kindle) first a couple of years ago, but still listened to it in just 2 days. I love the way the story is told. The author did a lot of research to make the story feel very real. Narrators were very good also.

How Audio Books Should Be
Would you consider the audio edition of Water for Elephants to be better than the print version?
This was definitely comparable if not better than the book. The narrator and alt voices really take you along for the ride and make the setting easily imaginable. Highly recommend buying this, I enjoyed it immensely.

I very much enjoyed this story.
This was a really great story. The voice for the older Jacob was fabulous. I became quite invested in all of these people, and the hierarchy of the performers. Both funny and sad and at times I became quite lost into the story and sat in my driveway waiting for a good point t to stop the book and get out of the car!

I cried when this book ended! BEAUTIFUL STORY!
Would you listen to Water for Elephants again? Why?
I would listen to this book again and I just finished it! Loved the narrators and story! Suspenseful, heartbreaking, romantic, descriptive! This book became a movie but the audible itself provides so much imagery you can use the descriptions and create your own movie in your mind if you haven't seen it!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Water for Elephants?
I think old Jacob at "90 or 93" is a memorable phrase/concept. There is so much depth to Jacob as he ages, "Trying to keep his mind wholesome..". As he remembers his life when he was a young man.
Have you listened to any of David LeDoux and John Randolph Jones ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have never heard any narrations by these performers but I am a fan now! Especially of the man who plays Jacobs older voice! His performance was consistent and fit perfectly. It really added to those tear jerkier scenes!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
All of the nursing home scenes, and Rosie's journey!
Any additional comments?

I absolutely loved this story; it was performed perfectly and I thoroghly enjoyed the story itself. There's plenty of adventure that gets your blood moving because you're so engrossed in the story, but then the romance makes you ache for the characters. All I can say is perfect from beginning to end.
