Story
In the years between her first public lecture in 1961 and her last in 1981, Ayn Rand spoke and wrote about topics as different as education, medicine, Vietnam, and the death of Marilyn Monroe. In The Voice of Reason, these pieces are gathered together in book form for the first time. Written in the last decades of Rand's life, they reflect a life lived on principle, a probing mind, and a passionate intensity. With them are five essays by Leonard Peikoff, Rand's longtime associate and literary executor.

One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

Story
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

Who needs philosophy? Ayn Rand's answer: Everyone. This collection of essays was the last work planned by Ayn Rand before her death in 1982. In it, she summarizes her view of philosophy and deals with a broad spectrum of topics. According to Ayn Rand, the choice we make is not whether to have a philosophy, but which one to have: a rational, conscious, and therefore practical one, or a contradictory, unidentified, and ultimately lethal one.

The foundations of capitalism are being battered by a flood of altruism, which is the cause of the modern world's collapse. This was the view of Ayn Rand, a view so radically opposed to prevailing attitudes that it constituted a major philosophic revolution. In this series of essays, she presented her stand on the persecution of big business, the causes of war, the default of conservatism, and the evils of altruism.

“It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil.” Deep issues of conscience are explored in Ayn Rand’s dystopian tale of a man who dares to fight against a system that invades his very mind and identity.

Story
This is Ayn Rand's challenge to the prevalent philosophical doctrines of our time and the "atmosphere of guilt, of panic, of despair, of boredom, and of all-pervasive evasion" that they create. One of the most controversial figures on the intellectual scene, Ayn Rand was the proponent of a moral philosophy, an ethic of rational self-interest, that stands in sharp opposition to the ethics of altruism and self-sacrifice.

Story
In this beautifully written and brilliantly reasoned collection of essays, Ayn Rand throws new light on the nature of art and its purpose in human life. Once again, she demonstrates her bold originality and her refusal to let conventional ideas define her sense of the truth. Rand eloquently asserts that one cannot create art without infusing it with one's own value judgments and personal philosophy - even an attempt to withhold moral overtones only results in a deterministic or naturalistic message.

Story
After the publication of Atlas Shrugged in 1957, Ayn Rand occasionally lectured in order to bring her philosophy of Objectivism to a wider audience and apply it to current cultural and political issues. These taped lectures and the question-and-answer sessions that followed added not only an eloquent new dimension to Ayn Rand's ideas and beliefs, but a fresh and spontaneous insight into Ayn Rand herself.

Story
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon.

Needs redone
Overall, the story is good and one gets a really good sense of the insane living conditions of early USSR. The narration of this work by Mary Woods leaves much to be desired. At times she “speed reads” through a chapter then she’ll even out for a while. Sometimes she has good voice inflection, and other times she’s flat and dull to the point of distraction.

Different from Rand's other books
We The Living feels different from Rand's other books even though it shares many common themes with Anthem. Listeners who are not familiar with Soviet communist propaganda and ideology may find this book hard to follow because it references many Soviet government institutions and slogans. At the same time, this book does a good job of depicting the Soviet ideology and the overwhelming effect of Soviet rule on people's everyday life. Even though it is not autobiographical, it also offers a useful backdrop to Rand's subsequent writing.
Although some of the other reviews complain of the audio quality, I thought that it was fine. The audio does sometimes accelerate, but I felt that the narrator did that on purpose and it worked well with Rand's writing style in this particular book.

Such a emotional charged story
Say what you will about Ayn Rand.
You may disagree with her philosophies.
But she is one Hell of a storyteller.
Combine that with her unique experience of growing up and through post revolutionary Russia. We the Living delivers a well rounded tale of disappointment, triumph and courage in times where one is desperate beyond what we can imagine in our 21st century world.

Excellent
If you could sum up We the Living in three words, what would they be?
Life changing story
What other book might you compare We the Living to and why?
Hard to compare - uplifting like The Fountainhead, yet tragic like Anna Karenina
Which character – as performed by Mary Woods – was your favorite?
Kira - Ms Woods captured her essence perfectly
If you could take any character from We the Living out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Leo - to try to convince him to keep fighting
Any additional comments?
This is one of my favorite books; Mary Woods did an amazing job capturing the characters.

Explains so much!!
I did not like the narrator at all at first, but i got used to it, she did well, It must be hard for a female to impersonate 25 different burly Russian men without sounding silly. By the end though, i felt like (especially during the narration parts) in was Rand herself reading it to me.
I had read the other three Ayn Rand book prior to this, and it helped make sense out of the other three a little more. You can totally see the roots for Fountainhead, Anthem, and Atlas in this book. I agree with the other commenter who stated that of the three main characters, only the Filthy Commie had my respect by the end. The other two really pissed me off in the third part of the book. Lastly, i suddenly now have a great interest in the plight of the everyday Russain during/after the revolution. It was fascinating learning the details about how they were forced to live, and Rand does a great job of illustrating a backwardness/hypocrisy of communism without explicitly saying it like in other works of hers.

Surreal Vision
We The Living is an amazing and well written story. It feels like a cross between a dramatic narrative and a history textbook. While the character interactions and events in their lives are incredibly personal and dramatic, the way that Ayn Rand describes those characters and events along with a plethora of background information makes the story seem like a drawn out newspaper article trying to give all the information possible. I really liked the story because it gave a peasant's view of early communist Russia. It was descriptive to a fault and the social commentary is classicly blunt. A must read/listen for fans of historical social commentaries.
