About this listen
In 1937 F. Scott Fitzgerald was a troubled, uncertain man whose literary success was long over. In poor health, with his wife consigned to a mental asylum and his finances in ruins, he struggled to make a new start as a screenwriter in Hollywood. By December of 1940, he would be dead of a heart attack.
Those last three years of Fitzgerald's life, often obscured by the legend of his earlier Jazz Age glamour, are the focus of Stewart O'Nan's gorgeously and gracefully written novel. With flashbacks to key moments from Fitzgerald's past, the story follows him as he arrives on the MGM lot, falls in love with brassy gossip columnist Sheilah Graham, begins work on The Last Tycoon, and tries to maintain a semblance of family life with the absent Zelda and daughter Scottie.
Fitzgerald's orbit of literary fame and the golden age of Hollywood is brought vividly to life through the novel's romantic cast of characters, from Dorothy Parker and Ernest Hemingway to Humphrey Bogart. A sympathetic and deeply personal portrait of a flawed man who never gave up, even as his every wish and hope seemed thwarted, West of Sunset confirms O'Nan as "possibly our best working novelist" (Salon).

Story
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

When beautiful, reckless Southern belle Zelda Sayre meets F. Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918, she is seventeen years old and he is a young army lieutenant stationed in Alabama. Before long, the "ungettable" Zelda has fallen for him despite his unsuitability: Scott isn't wealthy or prominent or even a Southerner, and keeps insisting, absurdly, that his writing will bring him both fortune and fame. Her father is deeply unimpressed.

J.R. Moehringer grew up captivated by a voice. It was the voice of his father, a New York City disc jockey who vanished before J.R. spoke his first word. Sitting on the stoop, pressing an ear to the radio, J.R. would strain to hear in that plummy baritone the secrets of masculinity and identity. Though J.R.'s mother was his world, his rock, he craved something more, something faintly and hauntingly audible only in The Voice.

Story
For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

Story
From New York to Paris, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald reigned as king and queen of the Jazz Age, seeming to float on champagne bubbles above the mundane cares of the world. But to those who truly knew them, the endless parties were only a distraction from their inner turmoil and from a love that united them with a scorching intensity.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's Denoument
This quiet book about the last year's of F. Scott Fitzgerald's life held my interest by detailing a very interesting time in Hollywood and American cultural history, as well as treating Fitzgerald like an ordinary human being rather than an icon. In the waning years of his life, he was a script writer in Hollywood and failing in a dispirited battle with alcoholism, yet still tried to be a decent husband and father in his own way. The book is mostly set in Hollywood, with Fitzgerald's benders even less dramatic than Humphrey Bogart's. There are occasional trips to the mental health facility where Zelda Fitzgerald lives - making us wonder what she would have been like in a modern context with modern pharma and more options than just being a debutante and wife of a once-dashing literary genius. O'Nan does a good job painting the scenes with a wistful melancholy that matches Fitzgerald, with his work ethic and sensibilities unmarred by alcoholism but his gift muted by the disease.

A Story Told By Candlelight
This is a poetic, beautiful book back at early Hollywood and F Scott Fitzgerald’s place in it. It is softened out like told by candlelight, with sharp painful edges gossamer to make hazy the sting of harsh light. I enjoyed it very much and recommend it .

Fitzgerald’s Hollywood Years Come Alive
For fans of F. Scott Fitzgerald this is an enjoyable fact based fictionalization of his Hollywood years. It focuses on his relationship with Sheila Graham, a younger Hollywood columnist. It also gives a window into his struggles to survive as an independent writer within the studio system. And it tells of his tenuous but enduring connections with Zelda, his mentally disturbed wife, and Scottie, his daughter. The book has some slow parts at the beginning, but it picks up and made me a fan by the end. In his Hollywood years Fitzgerald was at a low point in his life. It would be years before The Great Gatsby would be recognized as a great American novel of first rank. He struggles with humiliation, poverty, alcoholism and heart disease. The dramatization of his prolonged bender while on a working trip to observe a Dartmouth winter carnival was effective and disturbing. He was in Sheila Graham’s living room when he had his fatal heart attack. This story is a tragedy the more emotionally gripping because it is as true as the author’s research could make it. The audio was recorded at slightly different volumes which I found annoying and Zelda’s accent did not ring true to me.

Good Story
The voice changes thine throughout and it wasn't too noticeable until the last 1/4 and then it happened frequently. Not sure why. Overall, good narrator and the story was good. Slow for the first half, but I found myself falling in love with Fitzgerald.
