About this listen

Robert Westfall's life is falling apart - everywhere but in math class. That's the one place where problems always have a solution. But in the world beyond high school, his father is terminally ill, his mother is squabbling with his interfering aunts, his boyfriend is unsupportive, and the career path that's been planned for him feels less appealing by the day. Robert's math teacher, Andrew McNelin, watches his best student floundering, concerned but wary of crossing the line between professional and personal. Gradually, Andrew becomes Robert's friend, then his confidante. As the year progresses, their relationship - in school and out of it - deepens and changes. And as hard as he tries to resist, Andrew knows that he and Robert are edging into territory that holds incalculable risks for both of them.

J. H. Trumble, author of the acclaimed Don't Let Me Go, explores a controversial subject with extraordinary sensitivity and grace, creating a deeply human and honest story of love, longing, and unexpected connection.

Contains mature themes.

Strong and Real

This was a suspenseful and honest story of how things can feel so right yet go so wrong. How someone can turn the life of someone upside with just a lie. Well written and keeps you wanting more!

Not an easy story

The topics are heavy. The tension and nervous anticipation run throughout. But the writing is good, and even though the recording is older, the sound quality and narration are pretty good too.

It reads as real, plausible.
Good story.

not my 1st time listening

This book has me in my feelings every time. This is the definition of true love. where you know it's wrong by today's standards but when it's just the two of you... You feel like nothing else matters. One day I will have that. Until then .. J. H. keep up the amazing work.

Excellent all-around!

The complicated relationships with believable twists and turns. Very relatable characters with fantastic development. Very good narration. I listen to about 4-5 books per week and have thousands I’ve read in my library. This was one of my favorites. You will not regret this buy and you’ll agree with me that we need to support this author so we can enjoy more of their storytelling.

Interesting look at a taboo subject

I leave this book with confused feelings. There is no doubt in my mind that I think the relationship depicted in this book was wrong. At no point, no matter the age of the student, is this ok. If you take it as an examination of the thought process of both protagonists then this is an interesting read. It was definitely suitable that no in depth description of sexual relations is given in the book. It is clear that the adult in this book is weak. He makes very poor decisions and inevitably they catch up with him. Though not nearly as badly as it could have. It is definitely a thought provoking listen.
The narration was OK. But one narrator spoke much faster than the other. I ended up slowing the narration down and it was less notable.

I was hesitant but glad I bought it

At first I was very hesitant as to whether or not I want to dive into this. I know it could be a topic that can be very disturbing to me. but in the end, I am glad I went ahead and bought it. first of all, the narrators did a wonderful job. The story was well crafted. The protagonists are relatable and flawed human beings. It wasn't anything like I feared it would be. There were a lot of angst, but ended happily so I can't complain. Recommend.

3.5

It’s not bad. Just drags a bit. I give it 3.5 stars. Could’ve used some cuts.
