Publisher's summary
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.
To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence - creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Only minutes after Abbie Elliot and her three best friends step off of a private helicopter, they enter the most luxurious, sumptuous, sensually pampering hotel they have ever been to. Their lavish presidential suite overlooks Monte Carlo, and they surrender: to the sun and pool, to the sashimi and sake, to the Bruno Paillard champagne. In the morning's harsh light, Abbie awakens on a yacht, surrounded by police. Something awful has happened - something impossible, unthinkable. Abbie, Winnie, Serena, and Bryah are arrested and accused of the foulest crime imaginable.

Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

Story
Emily Bell believes in destiny. To her, being forced to sing a solo in the church choir - despite her average voice - is fate: because it's while she's singing that she first sees Sam. At first sight they are connected. Sam Border wishes he could escape, but there's nowhere for him to run. He and his little brother, Riddle, have spent their entire lives constantly uprooted by their unstable father. As Sam and Riddle are welcomed into the Bells' lives, they witness the warmth and protection of a family for the first time.

Story
An exuberant, one-of-a-kind novel about love and family, war and nature, new money and old values by a brilliant New Yorker contributor. The Portable Veblen is a dazzlingly original novel that's as big-hearted as it is laugh-out-loud funny. Set in and around Palo Alto amid the culture clash of new money and old (antiestablishment) values, and with the specter of our current wars looming across its words, The Portable Veblen is an unforgettable look at the way we live now.

It begins as a statistical oddity: a spike in children born with acute speech delays. Physically normal in every way, these children never speak and do not respond to speech; they don't learn to read, don't learn to write. As the number of cases grows to an epidemic level, theories spread. Maybe it's related to a popular antidepressant; maybe it's environmental. Or maybe these children have special skills all their own.

Bernadette you lost me.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Bernadette was such a difficult and unlikeable character that even with her cute kid as a sidekick the story fizzled. WIth audio books the author has to tell a great story with characters you care about or you fall asleep, which is easy to do in AudioBookland.
What would I change about the book? See para above.

First world drama
This book has some interesting characters but I feel like it can be summed up as first world drama. I guess it's true to life as I know people like these characters but I personally find these types of people a little irritating, thusly this book was probably not a good pick for me.

interesting story
The storyline is interesting and different. The narrator has a good and distinct voice which would have worked well for bernadette but not all of the characters. She didn't change voices at all between characters making me wish i was reading instead of listening to it.

Wonderful beach read
What made the experience of listening to Where'd You Go, Bernadette the most enjoyable?
Interesting characters, flaws and all, that gain insight about themselves, and each other, as they try to figure out "Bernadette", the reclusive neighbor and mom to a precocious preteen girl. Clever story line without being cliche. Wonderful character performances. I savored the book during my latest road trip. The time flew by . . .

Perhaps my new favorite book!
Which scene was your favorite?
Between the Gaylord Street gnats, Bernadette's fishing vest, and Antarctica- it's truly hard to pick a specific part or scene in this book!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I not only listened to this book all in one setting, but I have continued listening to this book (3 times now, in fact!) This book is hilarious, heart-warming, frustrating, and wonderful all in one! I have been hard pressed to find another book that affects me the way this one has.
Any additional comments?
Give this book a shot! It's an easy listen and the narrator is perfect for this book. You will not regret this purchase

This type of humor if not my thing, but I appreciate the brilliance of the author.

Heartwarming insanity
Would you listen to Where'd You Go, Bernadette again? Why?
What a wonderful story - whimsical, wacky, wildly creative. The characters are lovably flawed and the adventure draws you in. Highly recommended as great entertainment, well-written and perfectly narrated.
What did you like best about this story?
Everything - terrific characters and a plot that carries you along.
Which character – as performed by Kathleen Wilhoite – was your favorite?
Close call - I'll go with Bee.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Audrey renouncing her vendetta against Bernadette and taking responsibility for making her seem mentally ill.

Thought provoking but narration lacking
Loved the realness of the characters but the narrator's infantile voices for women and girls made me crazy. Almost couldn't get past it but just when I was ready to return the book the characters and plot sunk the hook.
