Publisher's summary
Wild is a powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an 1100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe - and built her back up again.
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.
Strayed faced down rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Story
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Story
A genealogy test sparks a woman’s reflection on the two accounts of her life--the real one and the one she’s always told the world--in this poignant short story by Cheryl Strayed, the bestselling author of Wild. In 1964, teenage Geraldine Waters was sent away by her parents to an unwed mothers’ home, where she gave up her newborn for adoption. Ever since, she’s lived an alternative narrative. Decades later, it’s time for Geraldine to reconcile the telling of her life, to finally grieve, and to discover what happened to that part of her past that slipped away.

As a park ranger with the National Park Service's law enforcement team, Andrea Lankford led search and rescue missions in some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes across America, from Yosemite to the Grand Canyon. But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail.

Story
It was 23 months after his accident, and Peter was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany, "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better." He set a starting date three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.

At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild: Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his listeners to do the final sort of which is which.

By age 25, Heather Anderson had hiked what is known as the "Triple Crown" of backpacking: the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail - a combined distance of 7,900 miles with a vertical gain of more than one million feet. A few years later, she left her job, her marriage, and a dissatisfied life and walked back into those mountains. In her new memoir, Heather shares her distinct message of courage - her willingness to turn away from the predictability of a more traditional life in an effort to seek out what most fulfills her.

The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

Fabulous Stoy, Horrible Narration
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator's voice spoiled the listening experience for me. She sounds too old to be telling the story of a 20-something year old woman, and I found her voice to be annoying.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This was a great story. I related strongly to the author's abusive childhood, and to the loss of her beloved mother. I understood her reaction to the losses and experiences with self-destructive behaviors.
I was terrified for Cheryl while she was out on the trail alone. I read the print version at bedtime each night, and I'd go in to work the next day and tell a co-worker: "You won't believe what this crazy chick did last night!" as if I'd been there on the trail, watching her journey from a distance.
Any additional comments?
Why oh why wasn't the narration job given to the author? She has a beautiful voice. I asked Cheryl Strayed, via Facebook why she didn't read the audiobook, she said the job wasn't offered to her. Big mistake.

An Honor
A trip I would love to experience, a trip that so many of us could use to find meaning, develop inner strength, and to experience the beauty among us. The Lord created man as a survivor, Cheryl experienced her strength, she survived hardships, fears, and the unknown to face the purpose within her.
Thank you for your story and your inspiration. Keep on moving 00 )

POWERFUL STORY
What made the experience of listening to Wild the most enjoyable?
HAVING EXPERIENCED PARTS OF THE PCT MYSELF, I FOUND THE STORY MESMERIZING.
What did you like best about this story?
HOW, IN SPITE OF ADVERSITY AND BEING, IN MY ESTIMATION, MINIMALLY PREPARED, THE AUTHOR OVERCAME ADVERSITY AND TRIUMPHED.
Which character – as performed by Bernadette Dunne – was your favorite?
CHERYL
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
NO, I ENJOYED COMING BACK TO IT, PICKING UP WHERE I'D LEFT OFF, SOMEWHAT AKIN TO THE AUTHOR'S LEAVING AND COMING BACK TO THE PCT.

4-5 stars
This is at least four stars. There is something about that just spoke. I loved the way Cheryl didn't hold anything back. She let us see (or hear) the good the bad, the petty, the irrational, etc. I didn't feel like she tried to paint herself in a better light. The narrator did a great job as well. Her voice was soothing. I wanted to hear more.
Also. This is my third memoir and the first I've actually liked. So if memoirs aren't typically your cuppa, give this one a try.

Just wish it was Cheryl
Don't get me wrong, Bernadette was a great reader. And the story is fantastic--so inspiring. I just wish Cheryl had read it for the audio version. After hearing her voice often on the Sugar podcast I kept wishing I was hearing her tell her story. <3
