Editorial reviews

Actor Todd MacDonald introduces young listeners to the man behind some of English literature's greatest stories. In his warm, congenial baritone, the lively Aussie explores Shakespeare's upbringing in Stratford-upon-Avon, his marriage to Ann Hathaway, and the couple's eventual estrangement when Shakespeare moved to London to pursue his career. Young audiences will learn about the vast and varied nature of Shakespeare's writing: histories, comedies, tragedies, and the sonnet form are illustrated with examples from Shakespeare's writing. Likewise, children will better understand the historical context in which Shakespeare worked, including the patronage he received from Queen Elizabeth I and the inspiration he drew from mythology and folklore. At once informative and inviting, MacDonald's animated delivery is likely to captivate young audiences and enliven the learning experience.

Critic reviews

"I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)

Shakespeare, Little Known Facts

Such a famous author, poet and actor as William Shakespeare, I was very surprised at how little I really knew about him. Born around 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Shakespeare was only 18 years old when he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior (age 26) in 1582. They had three children, Susanna, Hamnet, and Judith. Hamnet, their son died of unknown causes when he was eleven years old. By 1585, it seems that Shakespeare had gotten the wanderlust and left his family for London, although no mention of him can be found until his plays began showing up on London stages in 1592. Probably the best known of Shakespeare's works is Romeo and Juliet. Others are Hamlet, Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew, to name only a few. Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616, at the age of 52

Interesting

It is interesting to know about William Shakespeare, a bit about his family as well as his life. I remember reading The Merchant of Venice as a part of language lessons in probably high school. Been a long time and now, looking forward to listening to audio books such Much Ado About Nothing, Othello and more by Shakespeare. As a matter fact, we are about to watch the play of Macbeth shortly. 🙂
