In Erinnerung an meine Tante Liz, Kanadierin mit Leib und Seele. 1949 kam die geborene Britin nach Nunavut, das grösste Territorium Kanadas mit besonderen Rechten für die dort lebenden Inuit, um als Hebamme für das neu gegründete National Health Service zu arbeiten. Ihre Arbeit auf Sanikiluaq (engl. Belcher Islands) in der Hudson Bay wurde ihr Lebensinhalt. Die Inuit (Eskimos) wurden ihre Familie, eine eigene gründete sie nie. Tante Liz wurde kanadische Staatsbürgerin, liebte ihre Wahlheimat mit jeder Faser ihres Herzens. Den Permafrost und die Temperaturen, die selbst in den Sommermonaten nur selten in den zweistelligen Bereich klettern, Eisbären und Polarfüchse, ihren Schlitten und ihre Huskys (Canadian Inuit Dogs), die offiziellen Tiere des Territoriums Nunavut. Nach jahrelangem berufsbegleitendem Studium promovierte sie mit Ende dreissig in Medizin, wollte »ihren Leuten«, den Inuit, noch besser helfen können. Tante Liz gönnte sich nur etwa alle fünf Jahre einen längeren Urlaub in Europa, verbrachte jedoch jedes Jahr einige Wochen auf der Insel Neufundland.
