About this listen

Of number-one New York Times best-selling author Sue Grafton, NPR's Maureen Corrigan said, "Makes me wish there were more than 26 letters." With only two letters left, Grafton's many devoted listeners will share that sentiment.

X: the number 10. An unknown quantity. A mistake. A cross. A kiss.

X: the shortest entry in Webster's Unabridged. Derived from Greek and Latin and commonly found in science, medicine, and religion. The most graphically dramatic letter. Notoriously tricky to pronounce: Think xylophone.

X: the 24th letter in the English alphabet.

Sue Grafton's X: Perhaps her darkest and most chilling novel, it features a remorseless serial killer who leaves no trace of his crimes. Once again breaking the rules and establishing new paths, Grafton wastes little time identifying this sociopath. The test is whether Kinsey can prove her case against him before she becomes his next victim.

Critic reviews

“Grafton’s endless resourcefulness in varying her pitches in this landmark series, graced by her trademark self-deprecating humor, is one of the seven wonders of the genre." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

“Excellent...pulse-pounding...Grafton has never been better.” (Booklist, starred review)

“Ratcheting up the heat as she heads toward the finish line of her alphabetically-framed series, Grafton has turned in a corker of a novel with X, upping her already high-level game.” (The Boston Globe)

eXcellent

I am a HUGE fan of these novels. I really feel that this is one if not the best. It only makes me worry that we might be coming close to the end. What do we have after Y and Z. If the next two are like X, lucky us. It's been a wonderful collection of wonderful reads. Thank you Sue Grafton

Loved it!

Having lived in the 80s, it's nice to visit and see the simpler,
yet exciting life that Kinsey leads.

Another winner...

Once again Sue Grafton has written a winner. I always like to hear Kinsey's latest cases, she never disappoints. Judy Kaye is the voice of Kinsey. The only downside to listening to this audiobook is the fact that I have to wait two years for the next book in the series! I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy a good mystery!

Kinsey is the best!

Lots going on in this story, but Kinsey manages to pull it all together. Judy Kaye brings so much to the narrative it's even MORE enjoyable. Now the bad part....I have to wait for the next one.

Kinsey back and just as good.

Listening to Judy Kaye takes me back to the days when my audiobooks were on cassette tapes and traded at Cracker Barrel. All the old characters, with the same endearing qualities. The story is pretty interesting, though it tales abit at the end. Hoping its the set up for "Y"!

not her best, but still a good book. It is not a book that you want to listen to again and again.

X stands for xtrordinary - multiple story lines stitched together into an engrossing narrative I thourghly enjoyed. And Judy Kayes performance was - as always - stellar.

How could you not love this book?

Where does X rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the top 10% because I have read all the previous Kinzey Millhones. Would not be a good one to start on.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

No, it was not particularly exciting, but it the three separate plots were all interesting, and I enjoyed the characters.

Have you listened to any of Judy Kaye’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

She did her usual exceptional job.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I enjoy a book I prefer to savor it and spread it out over a few days. I did it in 5 days. Will probably reread it soon, as I often do when I enjoy a book.

Any additional comments?

Can't understand several of the reviewers being disappointed. This was a typical Kinzey Millhone, just the way we like them.
