  • A Fun Way to Do Fun Money
    Jul 22 2024

Jesse shares a fun way to handle "fun money" from long-time YNAB software engineer Kyle. Kyle suggests creating separate bank accounts for fun money with separate budgets as well. His method evolved from the desire to keep the visibility of fun money separate from his spouse, so they could 1.) take any judgment or guilt away from spending fun money, and 2.) spend on fun things for each other without ruining the surprise!

Ordinarily, Jesse advocates for simplifying your bank accounts as much as possible, but Kyle is a veteran YNAB'er and his method may be a fun experiment for you to try in your own family!

  • The Utility (or Not) of the Month
    Jul 15 2024

We organize our lives by the calendar, and the calendar is organized into months. It's no surprise then, that we tend to think of finances in terms of months -- monthly payments, monthly contributions, having 3-6 months of expenses saved. The month has a lot of utility, but it is an arbitrary division of time. Jesse examines how the month can be useful, yet also detrimental, to making money decisions.

  • Maybe Just Buy the Thing (and Costco)
    Jul 8 2024

Jesse waxes poetic about Costco and how simple their model makes purchasing decisions. He also brings up the point that we often spend a lot of time searching for the best deal, for that one hot tip that will maximize our dollars for a certain purchase. Our time and attention is a resource as well, and perhaps we should just go buy the thing, and be done with it.

YNAB finally makes budgeting work

Before YNAB, I created budgets on paper, in envelopes, on spreadsheets, and in 2 other apps. I always just spent what I spent. This finally makes sense of my spending and it has allowed me to get almost 4 months ahead and close 6 savings accounts! Jesse's podcasts help me stay motivated and on track. Thanks, Jesse!

Weekly short simple talks about money and budgets

I'm a long time YNAB user and podcast listener. I like Jesse's easy going style and willingness to talk about whatever he's got on his mind that week. Some episodes might not directly apply to you, but there's usually some tidbit that makes you think about something a little differently than you did before,

His voice is soothing

I started listening to the podcasts in 2019. I listened from the first episode and slowly got caught up. The thing I like about Jesse Mecham and this podcast is the fact that he’s not yelling. He’s not yelling at me at what a crappy person I am for letting it get this badly and telling me I should have done this or that.

I wish I knew about the podcasts back when I started YNAB 4 (randomly saw it in Steam). The podcast would have helped me a lot because I finally realized I’m not the only one dealing with a ton of debt. The podcasts vary. He will have tips and advice on how to budget, stories that relate to budgeting, people come on the podcast and tell their stories and how they overcame in, random life updates (which I enjoy) and other things.

It’s definitely worth a listen :)
