2021年夏、顧問の佐藤淳先生率いる北海道旭川商業高校吹奏楽部（旭商）は、全日本吹奏楽コンクール・全国大会への切符をかけて全道大会に参加していた。10年前の出場を最後に全国大会から遠ざかっていた旭商にとって、全道大会の通過は悲願であった。定年を迎える淳先生は、この年を最後に旭商を退職することになっていた。
「最後のコンクール」を終えた全道大会からの帰路、バスの車中にある旭商の部員と淳先生のスマホにあるメッセージが届いた。それは彼らの気持ちを一気に高め、全国大会への道が確かなものだと“思わせる”には十分すぎるものだった。しかし結果としてそれは「誤報」であり、全国大会への出場は叶わなかった。
しかし約一か月後、淳先生のもとに一本の電話が入る。それは旭商にとって思いもかけない、最高のクリスマスプレゼントになるものだった──。
