यहां विस्तारपूर्वक जानें मां लक्ष्मी के साथ क्यों होती है भगवान गणेश का पूजा- बता दें कि इसके पीछे बैरागी साधु की कथा भी प्रचलित है।दरअसल एक बार एक वैरागी साधु को राजसुख भोगने की लालसा हुई उसने लक्ष्मी जी की आराधना की। उसकी आराधना से लक्ष्मी जी प्रसन्न हुईं और उसे साक्षात् दर्शन देकर वरदान दिया कि उसे उच्च पद और सम्मान प्राप्त होगा। दूसरे दिन वह वैरागी साधु राज दरबार में पहुंचा। वरदान मिलने के बाद उसे अभिमान हो गया। उसने राजा को धक्का मारा जिससे राजा का मुकुट नीचे गिर गया। राजा व उसके दरबारीगण उसे मारने के लिए दौड़े। लेकिन इसी बीच राजा के गिरे हुए मुकुट से एक कालानाग निकल कर भागने लगा। फिर क्या राजा ने इसे साधु की चमत्कार समझकर उसे अपना मंत्री बना लिया.. व उसे रहने के लिए अलग से महल भी दिया। इसी तरह फिर एक दिन उस साधु ने राजा ने अनजाने में राजा की जान बचा। और ऐसे साधु को वाहवाही मिल गई। इससे उसका अहंकार और भी बढ़ गया। इसके बाद अहंकारी साधु ने भगवान गणेश की प्रतिमा को बुरा बताते हुए महल से उसे हटवा दिया फिर क्या बुद्धि और विवेक के दाता भगवान गणेश उससे नाराज़ हो गए। उसी दिन से उस मंत्री बने साधु की बुद्धि बिगड़ गई वह उल्टा पुल्टा करने लगा। तभी राजा ने उस साधू से नाराज होकर उसे कारागार में डाल दिया। साधू जेल में पुनः लक्ष्मीजी की आराधना करने लगा। फिर मां लक्ष्मी ने दर्शन दे कर उससे कहा कि तुमने गणेश जी का अपमान किया है। इसलिए गणेश जी की आराधना करके उन्हें प्रसन्न करो। फिर साधु ने ऐसा ही किया। जिससे भगवान गणेश का क्रोध शांत हो गया। गणेश जी ने राजा के स्वप्न में आ कर कहा कि साधु को पुनः मंत्री बनाया जाए। राजा ने गणेश जी के आदेश का पालन किया और साधु को मंत्री पद देकर सुशोभित किया। इस तरह लक्ष्मीजी और गणेश जी की पूजा साथ-साथ होने लगी। इसलिए कहते हैं कि बुद्धि के देवता गणेश जी की भी उपासना लक्ष्मी जी के साथ ज़रूर करनी चाहिए क्योंकि अगर लक्ष्मी घर में आ भी जाये तो बुद्धि के उपयोग के बिना उन्हें रोक पाना मुश्किल है। अतः इस कारण के चलते दीपावली की रात्रि में लक्ष्मीजी के साथ गणेशजी की भी आराधना की जाती है।
