009 - Overcoming adversity with Matthew Whisken - Army Veteran and Amputee

  • Resumen

  • We always said that we would potentially go 'off-piste' with our podcast, and that not every episode had to be about property. If you've got an interesting story, we want to hear it! So on this episode we welcome Matt Whisken, who almost lost his life whilst serving for the Queen's Royal Hussars in the British Army during a tour of Afghanistan. Matt was the commander of a vehicle which was blown up by an IED during an operation. This resulted in Matt having to have is right leg amputated through the knee as well as significant damage to his left leg. Matt's story is incredible and in the episode we discuss how he started his army career, his injury and his road to recovery. Matt talks about how the game of golf has played a big part in his recovery, and we go onto discuss life now as a civilian. 0:00 - Introduction 0:31 - Introduction to episode 9 03:44 - Introduction to Matt Whisken 04:20 - Matt's background 05:07 - Boy soldier - Army cadets at 13 years old 06:13 - Army selection at 15 years old 10:17 - Basic training at Bassingbourn 11:57 - Phase 2 training - Bovington - Challenger 2 Tank Training 16:32 - 18 years old and joining his regiment - The Queens Royal Hussars 24:21 - Exercises in Poland 26:18 - What is it like driving a tank 28:37 - Matt's first tour - Iraq 2008 39:09 - Canada 43:53 - Pre deployment training for Afghanistan 50:33 - Leaving for his tour of Afghanistan 1:00:40 - Commanding his Warthog vehicle and his fateful journey 1:10:17 - Matt's long road to recovery and his new love of golf 1:19:50 - Battle Back Golf 1:31:28 - Civilian life after the army
