A Summer to Forget for US Soccer

  • Resumen

  • It has been a difficult summer for US soccer and one to forget. The USMNT suffered a humiliating group exit in the Copa America, which the US hosted. The USYNT U23 featured in their first Olympics since 2008 and their first knockout stage appearance since 2000. It quickly became disappointing when the U23 team lost to Morocco 0-4 in the Quarterfinals. The U20 had a great group stage in the CONCACAF U20 Championship but struggled to convince the nations of the confederation that they are a championship contender. This led to them losing to Mexico in the Final after a controversial goal, ending our hopes of winning the trophy for a 4th consecutive time.

There are some positives to take away. USSF finally decided to part ways with Gregg Berhalter and currently looking for a manager from Europe. Both the U23 and U20 did not take the best possible eligible players, giving us hopes still for the next 2 generations. Players like Johnny Cardoso, Malik Tillman, and Jalen Neal did not take part in the Olympics. As for the U20, the team was missing the likes of Joshua Wynder, Cole Campbell, and Diego Kochen. There are still plenty of players who can make a future impact for the USMNT than the players who were featured in both youth tournaments.
