Welcome to my Audio Adventure where I get to be an actor, a playwright, a songwriter, and a storyteller. In this opening episode, I play all five parts in a scene from my hit comedy Escabana In Da Moonlight, perform my song “God’s Little Joke,” and take you behind the scenes into my final performance as Atticus Finch in the Broadway production of To Kill A Mockingbird.

In town for the Toronto Film Festival, a wayward pedestrian screamed at me, which inspired my song “Have a Good Life then Die.” In a speech that will outlive me, I take you on the set of The Newsroom on the day Will McAvoy answered the question “What makes America the greatest country in the world?” “Now You Know You Can” is the song about what that day meant to me.

In “Snack Time With Harry Dunne,” Dumb and Dumber’s Harry Dunne interviews the actor who played him in the movie, Christianity’s hidden relationship with hemp is debated in the song “Jesus Was A Stoner,” and I write about what it means when your childhood hero passes away, leading into my song “Al Kaline.”

Arlo Guthrie’s hilarious song “Alice’s Restaurant” became the inspiration for “Recreational Vehicle,” the true story of what happened when I accidentally left my wife at a truck stop. I write about where songs come from, how they can just appear right in front of you, or in the case of “Grandfather’s Hat,” in someone else’s offhand remark.

When my sixth-grade teacher told me to get up in front of class and pretend I was a politician giving a speech while his pants were falling down, an actor was born. The actor becomes the playwright when I read all the parts in another scene from my hit comedy Escabana In Da Moonlight, and then I take you back to my first few days in 1970s Greenwich Village leading into the song “Ain’t Nothin’ New In New York City.”

While watching a football game, a holder fumbled a field goal attempt and I imagine why in the song “The Holder Couldn’t Hold It.” Being the bad guy in a Clint Eastwood movie means you’re going to get shot and killed by Clint, which became the song “Dirty Harry Blues.” And an innocuous remark by Ryan Reynolds on a film set became the fastest song I ever wrote, called “How ‘Bout We Take Our Pants Off and Relax?”

Follow me onto the Hollywood red carpet, where ego meets ambition and everybody wants to win. I recall meeting Esther Williams and Margaret O’Brien and how fame may be fleeting, but for them not forgotten, all of which leads into the song “Are You As Excited About Me As I Am.” I finish with a nod to the comedy duos I grew up watching on The Ed Sullivan Show, and in tribute to them, I perform both roles in my one-act comedy When You Know You Know.
