    In this episode, we discuss some of those key topics and how they impact athletic training. We talk about the definition of leadership, the struggle for advocacy, and some of the business structures within athletcs and if they are actually serving atheltic trainers.     Roland Schmidt is an athletic training that works in the secondary setting but beyond that he has taken a focus on care of the athlete that also has diabetes. Roland shares his personal story of how diabetes has impacted his life and the effects it can have on people. We also discuss many topics around diabetes with a primary focus on why it can be so difficult for athletes with diabetes to thrive at their desired activity. Roland shares a ton of great information on what athletic trainers can do and what they should know if they do work with an athlete with diabetes. There are many impactful things that the AT profession can do to help that person along their way in managing blood sugars, being prepared in case of emergency and just being another resource in that persons life.     Dr. Stamm is an athletic trainer, neuroscientist and concussion researcher. She recently wrote a book on how concussions and repetitive impacts can affect the brain of the developing of young children. This is obviously a big deal and it has become even more of a discussion with some of the high profile injuries that have occurred in the NFL. In this episode we talk about what has been happening with these injuries and a lot of the details around them and what it all means. We discuss the fencing response, second impact syndrome, and the ability for patients to make informed decisions after suffering a traumatic brain injury.     Dave took us up on our offer of wanting to hear everyone’s story and we’re glad he did. Dave has seen and done a lot in his life and his career. In this episode, he shares what life was like growing up being an amputee and how he learned from all his experiences and its impact on how he interacts and cares for patients.


    Dave also talks about his faith and the role it played when making big time life decisions. He also talks about how it impacts his care and how he is always open to the conversation about faith but never wants anyone to feel like it is being pushed onto them.
