  • From Classroom to Courtroom
    Sep 25 2024

Today's guest is Dr. Melissa Haulcomb, an Intellectual Property attorney at K&L Gates. Melissa has a PhD in Neuroscience from Loyola University Chicago and a JD from Indiana University - which she pursued during her post-doc! Melissa's story is one of how perseverance, the right mentors, and incredibly hard work can help you find the career of your dreams. Melissa and I talk about her career journey and what sparked her interest in patent law, and importantly the ways her life changed for the better when she decided to stop doing what was best for everyone else and start doing what was best for her. (As the saying goes, "self-care is never selfish.").

Here are a few things we mention during the podcast that you'll want to check out after listening: USPTO.gov (The US Patent and Trademark Office) Strict Scrutiny (The Supreme Court/Law podcast you didn't know you needed) Love this podcast? First of all, thank you! Second - drop us a five-star rating wherever you get your podcasts, and share with your friends who are also looking to make the switch from academics to industry!

  • Be Bold - With Dr. Gertrude Nonterah
    Aug 15 2024

Today's guest is The Bold PhD herself, Dr. Gertrude Nonterah! I first learned about G's work when I came across some of her wonderful LinkedIn articles and promptly signed up for her newsletter. G has a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Temple University, and has been a prolific writer since 2018 when she began freelancing after her postdoc was cut short. Since then, she's built the whole The Bold PhD brand around helping PhDs and trainees build their personal brand and also find jobs outside academia. G and I have an amazing conversation about everything career- and brand-building. Hope you enjoy!

You can find G on LinkedIn, YouTube (@TheBoldPhD), and at theboldphd.com.

  • It Takes Grit with Dr. Kerrie DeMarco
    Jul 10 2024
Today's guest is Dr. Kerrie Gruber-DeMarco, current Senior Program Management Director at Strategic Analysis Incorporated (which, full disclosure, is also where Cynthia works!). Kerrie has a PhD in Sports Psychology and Kinesiology from the University of Maryland, and has had an incredible 20+ year career working in the US Government on everything from Special Force member psychology to the nation's preparedness against infectious disease. We talk about pivoting some of the unique challenges women face when pivoting our careers (and how you don't need to know all the answers right away), how Kerrie celebrates each new obstacle that comes her way, and most importantly how your brain can be your strongest muscle when it comes to making your way through any challenge. Enjoy! You can find the link to Kerrie's favorite TED Talk here: https://www.ted.com/talks/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance?trigger=0s

  • Science for Your Country - With Dr. Kristin Herring
    Jun 20 2024

Today’s guest is Kristen Herring, PhD, scientific consultant supporting ARPA-H, a new government agency funding high-risk, high-reward research programs (disclosure, I also support ARPA-H in my day job).

Kristen has a PhD in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University, and she knew right away that a life in academia wasn’t for her. So, when she learned about the Presidential Management Fellowship, a program that gives newly-minted PhDs the opportunity to learn about scientific careers in the government, she applied and became the first Vanderbilt student to receive the honor! Through the program, Kristen found her first job at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and has been using her talents to support the government ever since. This is a great episode for those who, like me, had the impression that government science jobs only belonged to physicists, engineers, and computer scientists! Happy listening!

  • At ARVO With The BrightFocus Foundation
    May 5 2024

"Bench to Boardroom" is on the road! This week, we are in Seattle at the annual Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting to see some amazing research, catch up with some old friends, and network and make some new ones! Today's conversation is with our friends at the BrightFocus Foundation, Drs. Diane Bovenkamp and Preeti Subramanaian. We talk about the importance of conference travel for young researchers, this week's events that the foundation is sponsoring, and upcoming deadlines for their Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma grants.

The BrightFocus Foundation has awarded nearly $300 million to fund groundbreaking research to help make diseases of the eye and brain a thing of the past. Postdoctoral fellows within 4 years of graduation and New Investigators who are within 10 years of graduation are welcome to apply - even those who already work in industry or other for-profit institutions! This allows opportunities for those pre- and post-grad to pursue their ambitions beyond the traditional paths. Check out their website to learn more about their grant opportunities, deadlines, research they've funded, and how you can contribute. https://www.brightfocus.org/

  • Developing Trust As A Brand - Dr. Deva Boone
    Apr 30 2024

Today's guest is Deva Boone, MD MBA, owner and surgeon at Southwest Parathyroid Center, and one of the nation's foremost experts on parathyroid disease and parathyroid surgery. After obtaining her MD from Cornell Medical College, Dr. Boone first pursued a surgery residency followed by an endocrinology fellowship, and finally landed in the niche subspecialty of parathyroid surgery. (Don't worry if you don't know what the parathyroid is, that's the first topic!)

I met Deva on our first day as Executive MBA students at the University of South Florida. At the completion of the program, Deva and her family moved from Tampa, FL to Phoenix, AZ so she could begin the Southwest Parathyroid Center, where she now operates on patients from all over the world as a destination surgical site. During this podcast, we talk about formally pursuing an MBA degree and what it was like as doctors being students again, and how attending classes with those who specialized in finance, human resources, project management, and other highly specialized business fields forced us to think beyond the left side of our brains. We talk about the challenges we have faced as people who specialized in very niche medical topics, the importance of soft skills and body language in business and in medicine, her journey through entrepreneurship, and how introverts may find it easier to build an online brand than you think! If you or someone you know may have parathyroid disease, there is no one better than Dr. Boone. You can find her and learn more about the parathyroid here: www.southwestparathyroid.com or at www.devaboone.com

  • Organic Career Growth - Dr. Andrea Unser
    Apr 9 2024

Today's guest is Dr. Andrea Unser, Senior Research Scientist at Humonix Biosciences, Inc. Andrea has had a lifelong interest in science, and has spent so much of her life in research and engineering that she actually dreamed of having a boring 9-to-5 job while she was in grad school! Thankfully, she was lucky enough to meet her future Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Karen Torrejon, when they worked in a lab together, and they have been working together ever since! Andrea and I talk about the importance of making connections, why it's sometimes good to geographically restrict yourself, and how future industry bench scientists can make themselves stand out in the interview process. Hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording!
