  • Onboarding Excellence: Standardized Orientation for State Nurse Anesthesiology Boards
    Oct 17 2024

We’re excited to welcome Julie Linton, DNAP, APRN, CRNA back to the show to explore the development and implementation of a standardized orientation program for state associations. She has undertaken a significant doctoral project on this subject and she is going to share her insights and findings with us. Today’s show will get into the motivation behind her project, the process of developing and implementing the pilot program, and the potential impact of standardized orientations on the leadership and governance of state associations.

Here’s some of what we discuss in this episode:

    • Why many state boards still don’t fully understand how to run a board meeting.
    • What’s the most effective way to do board orientations?
    • Establish what you want the culture of your organization to be before you dive into the nuts and bolts.
    • The leadership principles and ethics portion of the board.
    • The difference in charismatic leadership and transformational leadership.

  • Understanding Cognitive Biases in Anesthesia
    Oct 15 2024

Cognitive biases are systematic errors in thinking that can influence clinical judgment and potentially lead to adverse outcomes for patients. By understanding these biases, anesthesia providers can improve their decision-making process and enhance patient safety. Today we’ll take a deep dive into the world of cognitive biases and how they affect decision-making in anesthesia practice.

Here’s some of what we discuss in this episode:

    • Heuristics or decision-making shortcuts can lead to cognitive biases.
    • How the different biases impact the performance of CRNAs.
    • The framing effect and the gambler's fallacy influence decision-making.
    • Effective team communication reduces the likelihood of confirmation bias or anchoring bias.

  • Gut Feelings: Exploring Aspiration Risks with GLP-1 Agonists
    Oct 10 2024

Breakthroughs in healthcare are always exciting to learn more about and one that caught our attention is GLPs, a group of therapeutic agents revolutionizing the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. We spent time with Amy M. Reed, PhD, CRNA at the AANA Annual Congress in San Diego to learn more about the potential of GPS and how therapeutic agents are not only transforming diabetes care but also showing promise in other medical areas.

Here’s some of what we discuss in this episode:

    • What does the current literature say regarding preoperative management of patients taking GLP-1 RAs?
    • Importance of nurse anesthesia programs and grassroots effort for POCgUS implementation.
    • What are our national organizations’ positions on point of care ultrasound?
    • How Amy became interested in teaching and educating nurse anesthesia residents.
    • Amy’s perspective on the shortage of faculty and what we can do to rectify the shortage.
