The talk features Sarah Luger, a research scientist in natural language processing (NLP) at OSV, who spoke about how artificial intelligence (AI) and NLP technologies are evolving, how they feed into each other, and what to expect from them in the future. Additionally, she offers insights on machine data, software innovation, and how AI stands to reshape human livelihoods and behavior.

Sarah holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh in computer informatics. Her career spans work with AI, machine learning, and NLP at startups and other tech companies in the Bay Area. She is an expert in multilingual annotation strategies for machine learning algorithms in classification tasks and question-answering. Orange Silicon Valley’s podcast is back with a new episode focused on the state of Smart Cities technology. Will Barkis, who leads OSV’s Smart Cities program and works on projects related to public policy and B2B data-sharing, sat down with the Bistrocast to discuss the pilot projects that some cities are already working on, as well as where new opportunities exist to leverage technology and help cities to better serve their residents.

Will comes from a science and policy background that includes neuroscience research at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as time spent at the National Science Foundation and Mozilla. His journey has since taken him here to OSV and work with the mayor’s office in San Francisco, which has helped to inform his perspective on connective tech in urban environments.
