• Stream, Sync, and Score: Inside the Business of Music Publishing [Episode 209]
    Jul 26 2024
Our guest is veteran music publisher and industry expert Randall Wixen, who has just released the fifth edition of his book The Plain and Simple Guide To Music Publishing.

Music publishing is one of the most complex parts of the music business, and yet it can be the most lucrative area of income for musicians. Wixen presents a clear, concise approach on how music publishing works today. The book includes a foreword by Tom Petty, among the many who put their trust in Wixen with their music catalog. Wixen is one of the most respected names in the music industry. He’s the founder of Wixen Music Publishing, Inc. in Los Angeles. With a sister company, Wixen Music UK Ltd. in London, the companies administer the song catalogs of many top artists from the last 50 years, ranging from George Harrison, the Doors, Neil Young and Tom Petty, to the Black Keys, Andrew Bird and Fitz & The Tantrums.

Randall gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the music publishing business in this interview plus his thoughts on the recent legal battle between Daryl Hall and John Oates, the famous 1984 lawsuit where John Fogerty was being sued for stealing a song he wrote himself, the Vanilla Ice vs Queen legal battle over his use of the song "Under Pressure", and more. This is a fascinating look at the side of the music business few know.

  • From Mod Beginnings to Rock Legends: Exploring The Small Faces and Faces Discography [Episode 208]
    Jul 21 2024
Andrew Darlington is the author of the brand new book The Small Faces and The Faces: Every Album, Every Song.

They started out as a mod fourpiece with Steve Marriott on lead vocals. With hit singles including “Itchycoo Park”, “Lazy Sunday”, “All Or Nothing”, and “Tin Soldier”, they evolved into one of the UK’s most successful bands by the end of the 60s. After Marriott left the band to form Humble Pie, the remaining members Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan, and Kenney Jones joined forces with singer Rod Stewart and guitarist Ronnie Wood to start a new era as Faces. The band’s 1971 album A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse, became a worldwide hit, thanks to the single, "Stay with Me". But by the mid-70s, Faces was no more and the members would go on to forge new phases of their careers, most notably Rod Stewart. But the music of the Small Faces and Faces is not forgotten. In the latest book in Sonicbond’s On Track series, Darlington lays out the full story of the Small Faces and Faces song-by-song, from the very start, to the very end.

  • Untold Stories From the Widows of Ronnie Van Zant, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Keith Moon & More [Episode 203]
    Jun 25 2024
Lori Tucker-Sullivan is a first-time guest. She’s the author of the new book I Can't Remember If I Cried: Rock Widows on Life, Love, and Legacy. The stories of rock musicians who die young are the thing of lore and legend. Accidents, drug overdoses, plane crashes—all have taken the lives of male rock stars still in their primes. But what became of their widowed brides? How did they survive a loss so great? What is it like to have to share your grief with millions of strangers? And where are these widows today?

I Can’t Remember if I Cried is part music history, part memoir, based around interviews with rock widows conducted by Lori —who herself lost her husband in 2010. With each widow that Lori interviews, she learns lessons in love, forgiveness, coping, and moving on. The book is framed by the author’s own narrative to create a single thread that links the stories together to ultimately create a tale of how the author’s life is changed through her interactions with these amazing women. Among the women profiled in the book are:
    • Judy Van Zant who, after losing husband Ronnie of Lynyrd Skynyrd, sued the re-formed band in order to protect her interests.
    • Sandy Chapin, widow of Harry Chapin, who has worked tirelessly to uphold Harry’s significant legacy around activism and hunger prevention.
    • Crystal Zevon, the ex-wife of Warren Zevon, who provides details of her abusive relationship with Warren and how she resolved her anger and grief.
    • Jamie Weiland, widow of Stone Temple Pilots’ Scott Weiland, speaking openly of Scott’s mental health, which at times kept him housebound for days.
    • Janna Leblanc, girlfriend of Stevie Ray Vaughan, who shares the details of her visits with Stevie in rehab.
    • Gloria Jones, the girlfriend of T. Rex’s Marc Bolan who was driving the car which crashed and took Marc’s life.
    • Anna Walter-Lax, girlfriend of Who drummer Keith Moon
Lori shares with us some of what these women shared with her for the book and how her life has been changed as a result of writing this book.
