  • What does it mean to be a Chef?
    Mar 16 2023

To me it is no different than being a doctor, or a teacher, or a librarian, or a plumber, or a midwife/doula (my personal favorite people). We are all part of our community and our job is to make our community better. So in the case of Chefs, we have to nurture our communities with delicious food. But we also have to make sure they are healthy, because that is the main objective of food. We eat to stay alive, and because we have people who love us, we have the responsibility to be healthy so we can provide for them. Our job as chefs is to create insanely delicious food using the highest quality ingredients available! And what are the highest ingredients available? You can ask this question to any chef and they will all answer the same way: The highest quality ingredients are those that come from as close to your location as possible! The freshest, the ones that were grown or produced with love, on soil that has been taken care of. Grown by the hands of people who care about our communities. Small local farms and ranches. The secret super heroes and foundation of our communities The job of a chef is the same job that we all have. Make things better in our own way. We do it with food. you can do it in any way you can, either directly through the work that you do, or by supporting small local businesses who are committed to helping our communities become more resilient. The key here is that we must not see our career in terms of being a job, but instead an opportunity to be useful, to find meaning in the world, to try out best to put smiles on people’s faces. To do everything in our power to make things better for all of us. That’s what a chef is supposed to do.
