Crimes of the Centuries

By: Amber Hunt
  • Summary

  • Crime is so commonplace that it takes something particularly shocking to be labelled the “crime of the century.” Even so, there are a lot of cases that have earned the distinction. In each episode of Crimes of the Centuries, award-winning journalist Amber Hunt will examine a case that’s lesser known today but was huge when it happened. The cases explored span the centuries and each left a mark. Some made history by changing laws. Others were so shocking they changed society.

  • S4 Ep18: The Pimlico Poisoning: The Trial of Adelaide Bartlett
    Jul 15 2024
Soon after London bade farewell to 1885 and welcomed the new year, a woman named Adelaide Bartlett roused her sleeping house with screams. Her husband, Edwin, who had seemed to have turned a corner on his recent illness, was dead. Housemates who arrived in a panic immediately noticed a chemical smell in the room that suggested Edwin hadn't died of natural causes. The case, which would soon be dubbed the Pimlico Poisoning, proved to be one of the most sensational in 19th-century England.

Love this podcast

I would love more. The only (small) complaint I have is that when they do their advertising the change in voices is kind of jarring. But the stories seem well researched, it's interesting, I like listening.

So glad you're back!

Stumbled across this podcast last fall and binged the first two seasons. Have been waiting with bated breath for the third! Each show is fascinating and the host does an amazing job. I'm impressed with the research that goes in and her citing of sources.

Excellent style and substance

I love the narration of these stories. While it is clear that she does have normal emotions, she's not trying to imbue the facts of the story with her personal feeling aside for the times where she specifically states how she feels about it. There is no hammy manipulation trying to elicit listener reaction with juicy details. there are plenty of details and we are left to our own reactions.

It is clear that the narrator is well read and employs an excellent understanding of grammar.

The stories are quite interesting and I love that she backs them up with where she researched the information. Many of these are new to me and not the same old stuff different day. Full marks all around.
