Rather than focusing on the deficits of what marginalized groups don’t have, let’s focus on the assets they do have. We need to shift the ideas of who is a good scientist. It’s also about brave individuals paving the way for others who look like them by being the first, the few or the only because representation matters.

    Nicollette Mitchell, geologist and doctoral student, is passionate about DEI in STEM in higher education. Nicollette shares more on justice and equity in higher education.
