One of the fastest ways to become disappointed in life is to begin dwelling on all the good things you think you deserve that you haven't yet received. It's very possible that you believe you deserve a raise at work, a word of praise, to be married if you aren't or to have a better marriage if you are, for your kids to shine like angels, for your bank account to be filled to overflowing, and the check engine light to never come on in your car. But none of these things have been promised to us.

I believe that when we look at what Scripture teaches us, we're shown that when we have Jesus, we truly do have what we need most in this world. We need Him more than we need perfect earthy circumstances. We need Him more than we need the treasures of this earth. We need His mercy more than we need the momentary approval of our peers.

So we can go through life disappointed that we didn't get some of the things that we thought we deserved, or we can be grateful for the mercy of Christ which is a blessing He offers to us that we definitely didn't deserve. And if we can learn to become grateful for Christ's mercy, we'll start to view ourselves and others through that lens. As recipients of mercy, we show mercy. As those who didn't receive the condemnation we deserved, we can also choose not to condemn others but rather bless them in Jesus' name.

In Proverbs 25, I see at least three ways we can live this out. In view of the mercy of Christ, we can honor those who lead us, humble ourselves, and bless our enemies. Each action requires an application of Christ-centered mercy.

Beware of anyone who flatters you. Flattery is a form of manipulation that should put you on guard the second your ears hear it. Odds are, when you’re being flattered, the person doing the flattering is trying to get something from you or set you up for something unwise or unholy.

The Pharisees and Herodians that were sent to Jesus came on a mission to trap Him in His words. They didn’t like Him, trust Him, or worship Him. They rejected Him and wanted to make Him look bad in front of others. They sought to rob Him of His influence and authority, and they mistakenly believed flattery might help them achieve their goal.

Scripture tells us that they chose to flatter Jesus by acknowledging that He spoke the truth and wasn’t swayed by the opinions of others. They even had the audacity to applaud Him for teaching the way of God, even though they didn’t really believe what He said.

With their flattery out of the way, these leaders got to the crux of their question and asked Jesus if it was lawful for the people of Israel to pay taxes to Caesar. They wanted Jesus to take a public position on this contentious issue because they believed His answer was certain to upset someone.

When a person owns a decent portfolio of rental real estate, hiring a property manager makes a lot of sense. Historically, this approach has also been used in certain forms of agriculture as well. In Mark 12, Jesus tells a story about a man who owned land that he converted into a vineyard. He then leased that land to tenant farmers who would farm the land for him in exchange for a share of the profits. The story Jesus shared was about much more than entrepreneurship and economics, but He started with these concepts because they were familiar to those in His original listening audience.

And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country.” (Mark 12:1)

Jesus faced a lot of opposition during the His ministry. The majority of His opposition came from religious leaders who really should have been supporting Him. Quite regularly, Jesus would teach in parables to help explain concepts that these leaders should have understood. He also wanted to make deeper-level points that exposed the motives of these leaders’ hearts. As Jesus spoke of a vineyard that a man planted, established, and protected, He also referenced people whom this vineyard was leased to. Who do you suppose Jesus was referencing while sharing these examples?
