Eliza Gwillim's story: From hospital placement to part-time community physiotherapist

  • Resumen

  • In this 22nd episode of The Confident Physio show, Tristan White and Jess Soding from The Physio Co (TPC) sit down with Eliza Gwillim to get the rundown on why she chose to become a community physio, and how her career has panned out since joining TPC just under a year ago.

Fresh from a holiday break in Thailand, Eliza discusses her physio career to date and why community care physiotherapy aligns with her values of human connection and holistic care.

We delve into Eliza's typical week as a part-time community physiotherapist, highlighting client interactions that remind us of the joy found in helping others achieve milestones that are meaningful to them.

Eliza speaks about transitioning from student life to professional work while maintaining a healthy balance between personal time and job responsibilities. She emphasises how support within The Physio Co helped shape her experience positively through regular check-ins, workshops, social events, and mentorship opportunities.

When asked what's it been like working your first first job as a community physio, Eliza says:

"It's been really good on the whole. It was a learning curve at first. There was a lot more because you're self-managing your diary and communication with all kinds of people like families, next of kin, the clients themselves, and the home care managers. So there was definitely a learning curve. But saying that, the (TPC) team was super supportive, so it wasn't unmanageable."

Eliza discusses how she adapted to her new role, and how she has developed professionally across the course of the year with TPC.

"I think you settle in pretty quickly ... you've got your clients you look forward to seeing and you kind of shape your week around that, so you you're off to a good start.

"Over the nine- ish months I've been here. I've definitely developed a lot as a clinician."

Tristan wraps up the episode by reflecting on Eliza's career path—from initially considering hospital work to finding fulfillment in community-based roles—and celebrates how teamwork and guidance have contributed to both personal growth and meaningful client outcomes.
