Happy New Year! There are many reasons that New Year’s resolutions don’t stick, but they can if you approach them right.

Today, I talk about resolutions and plans. I explain why many don’t stick and I offer solutions. I talk about the power of strategizing and stopping to take stock. I note the power of shorter-term goals, the benefits of journaling, and the importance of being comfortable with sacrifice.

“Please do remember these three words: Sacrifice, Sacrifice, Sacrifice. Success often lies outside of your comfort zone, so get comfortable with being uncomfortable for a while.”

    - Murtaza Versi

  • Mending Broken Trust
    Aug 25 2022

Trust is like a mirror. You can fix it when it's broken but you can still the cracks in the reflection. If you built trust with your employees, then there is a chance you can break it as well. But how can you regain that trust if you break it?

Today, I talk about how trust affects the performance of your employees. I explain why trust is so important, and provide an example of how easy it is to break that trust. I share some of the steps you can take to rebuild your employee's trust. I also note the different types of trust you have in the workplace.

“We have to train others to take our positions instead of seeing them as our competition. Using this approach to build competence shows the team that you trust them to do just as good a job as you.”

    - Murtaza Versi

“Trust is more like a rubber band than a mirror. It can be stretched, sometimes to its limits, and not to go back in its original stretch.”

    ●      What happens when you break your employee’s trust

  • Ruth Shah-Wigley: Attitude and Adaptability of Leaders
    Jul 14 2022

Ruth Shah-Wigley is the Managing Director and Principal Consultant of ARS IURA Consultancy Service Ltd. Her experience includes the application of key international frameworks, multi-stakeholders, and civil society initiatives. She possesses a breadth of specialized expertise in human rights matters, particularly in business and human rights, as well as women’s and children’s rights.

Today, Ruth joins me to talk about the power of attitude and adaptability. She breaks down these terms and shares the story of how she discovered their power. She talks about the importance of creating spaces for justice and discusses how her mindset has changed over the course of her career. We talk about the importance of endurance, and she shares how her faith acts as her support system. She notes the importance of being realistic, flexible, compassionate, and empathetic. She discusses the need to give people grace, and she explains why it’s more important to be intentional about trying than it is to succeed every single time. She notes the importance of considering other people’s wants as well as your own, and she talks about how and how not to express a belief, even when you know yourself to be right.

“At the worst times...I sought value in myself through the eyes of God, because despite the fact that I’m unworthy and I’m a sinner, He thinks I’m worthy. And therefore, if that’s my benchmark, then nothing can touch me. Not even my own insecurity.”

    - Ruth Shah-Wigley

“You have to give people grace. It’s not always easy, and I’m not saying that I always do that without moaning and groaning under my breath--because I do. But what’s paramount for me is that I remember; I am intentional.”

  • EQ Is A Trainable Superpower. Here’s How-PT2
    Jul 7 2022

As we discussed last week, there are three key steps to training and strengthening your emotional intelligence as well as the emotional intelligence of others. Step two in the journey to improving your EQ is to take a good, hard look at your ability to be emotionally empathetic toward others. According to Dr. Daniel Goleman, emotional empathy is when you feel physically aligned with another person – as if their emotions are contagious. It’s when you feel a deeper connection with another person’s feelings.

This week, I explain what emotional empathy means and how it helps you improve your emotional intelligence. I discuss how emotional empathy helps us build deeper connections with the people around us and how asking your team to join a shared charity, cause, or community project can help strengthen their emotional empathy. I highlight how encouraging your team to spend time in less-formal, 1-to-1 settings focused on building their relationships with others can help improve their emotional empathy for the people they work with. I also explain why it’s essential for leaders to listen to their team members to understand their point of view regarding an issue or problem and how it can help you connect with them on a deeper level.

“Hold off on the judgment and be open to different ideas. We want to get an understanding of their emotional state, at that moment, and find a way to relate.” - Murtaza Versi

This week on Engage Relate Perform:

    ●      What emotional empathy means

    ●      How emotional empathy helps us build deeper connections with others

    ●      Understanding other people’s emotional states

    ●      Joining a shared charity, cause, or community project to strengthen your team’s emotional empathy

    ●      Setting aside time to focus on 1-to-1 relationship-building activities

    ●      The importance of listening to understand

    ●      Examples of empathetic responses

    ●      The negative impact of ‘feeling-stopper’ responses

  • EQ Is A Trainable Superpower. Here’s How-PT1
    Jun 30 2022

Do you believe it is possible to increase your own emotional intelligence? Is it possible to increase the EQ of others? According to Dr. Daniel Goleman, a person’s emotional intelligence is a malleable, trainable skill – unlike your IQ. He argues that a person could even train their emotional intelligence well beyond its natural levels.

So if EQ is a trainable skill, how can we work that skill like a muscle to build it up to that capacity?

In today’s episode, I explain what emotional intelligence is and discuss some of the key competencies of emotional intelligence. I explain how increasing your EQ can help you form better relationships. I explain what cognitive empathy is and share strategies you can use to improve it. I also discuss the benefits and drawbacks of using cognitive empathy skills when negotiating with others.

“Having empathy increases the likelihood of helping others and showing compassion.” - Murtaza Versi

    ●      How increasing your EQ can help you build better relationships
