Episode 16: QUESTION with Poet and Writer Godfrey Rust

  • Summary

  • In this week's episode, Carol speaks to Godfrey Rust, poet and musician. He's had all sorts of day jobs from journalist to pop chart manager and data modelling consultant.

He lives in West London with wife Tessa, three married children and two grandchildren various places. His poems are used round the world especially at Christmas and Easter services. A dozen years in the 80s/90s played concerts and recorded three albums with Geoff Shattock (as Shattock and Rust). Became less comfortable with a narrow evangelical theology as reality, love and God seemed much bigger than that. For 20 was years was involved in the eclectic Cafe Church community at St Johns in Ealing, as "chief musician" and co-ordinator in the last five. Stepped away last year at 70 as he wanted to focus on a few specific things in the creative years left to him including writing a book about how he believes creation, science and the resurrection some together in a bigger way than either Christianity or science suggest and producing another album which he is now in the middle of recording with a wonderful set of musicians. It's being produced by his son Adam who is a producer/music director/multi-instrumentalist - it helps to have one in the family!

I was diagnosed three months ago with gastro-oesophagal cancer so having treatment at present. Its not operable so I'm not at all sure how long I may be around for (how many of us are anyway?!) but so far treatment is going well and I'm not afraid of dying, only sad that we all have to leave loved ones behind to grieve.
