Episode 44 - A Full Circle Moment: How Consistent Daily Habits Lead to Success {a conversation with Pamela Brett}

  • Summary

  • In this episode, Pamela Brett shares about her journey as a school teacher, in particular, teaching at a school with marginalized children. Everyday was a challenge, facing constant pushback and backlash from her students. Pam speaks about the immense anger that was projected at her from her students, and how at her weakest moment, she chose to persevere rather than give up. Using her intuition as a guiding post, Pam showed up each day, met her students where they were at, and lead each one of them to success. Tune in to hear this remarkable story, and how Pam continues to lean into her passion by paying it forward in coaching other teachers.

    Pamela Brett is a Mathematics Specialist and the founder of a non-profit. She was a K-8 math teacher and math coach, as well as a curriculum writer. She has her Doctorate in mathematics education with a focus on how teachers attend to students' beliefs and emotions around learning math. She believes that every person is a math person and it is her life's mission to help people (kids and adults) see their potential as a mathematician. Pam is an avid reader of all things math education, and is currently working on launching her podcast - Blue Glasses Math - into the world for all to "see" math teaching and learning through different lenses.

    In this episode, Pam also talks about:

    • The moment she realized her students were never held accountable to think for themselves, and how this was the turning point for her that kept her going in the midst of the daily challenges;
    • Her mentor's guidance was to "just get through the year and get them to graduation", but Pam knew these kids needed more from her than just traditional text book teachings;
    • How she not only persevered through the anger being projected at her from her students, but how she also persevered through her own emotional turmoil to be there for them at the time that they needed her the most;
    • She followed her intuition and taught in alignment with how she wanted to feel, which ultimately allowed her students to flourish;
    • Pam saw her students as humans, took the time to get to know them and relate with them, which formed deep connections and trust in her relationships with each of them;
    • By fulfilling her needs first, she was able to fully serve the kids and give them what they needed.
