Ashland Creek Press, an eco-fiction publisher, first came on our radar in the pre-COVID era when we interviewed Katy Yocom, author of Three Ways to Disappear, a novel set partly in India that focuses on animal conservation and a relationship between two sisters. But one of our other former guests, Jennifer Caloyeras, host of the Books Are My People podcast, also had a book published by Ashland Creek: her 2015 novel Strays. We’re always interested in small presses, so we were excited to talk to Midge Raymond and John Yunker about their work running one. But Midge and John are also writers who have collaborated on a recently published novel titled Devils Island, which is set in Tasmania amongst the endangered and much-maligned Tasmanian devil. While this is a conservation-leaning novel, it is also a suspense story about a naturalist tour that goes very wrong, involving a disappearance and a death. • Sacrifice Zones | Pony Morris | VOCAL KY | Harm Reduction | Sept. 22, 2024
    Sep 21 2024
Today’s show is the first in a series of follow-up programming that Sacrifice Zones will be teaming up with VOCAL Kentucky for. VOCAL stands for Voices of Community Activists and Leaders and is a program brought to our great city by Shameka Parrish-Wright and Jeremy Saunders. VOCAL-KY is building a movement of low-income people dedicated to ending the AIDS epidemic, the war on drugs, mass incarceration, and homelessness across the country. They fight for systemic change rooted in justice, compassion, and love. They approach this work with a firm belief in reducing harm and ending stigma, and the knowledge that the issues impacting our communities are driven by institutional oppression, not personal failings. Pony Morris is a community activist and leader representing VOCAL Kentucky and Pony came to the studio to introduce the concept of harm reduction for my audience. This show will feature some sound from that show. Harm reduction works by addressing broader health and social issues through improved policies, programs, and practices. Resources: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/harm-reduction Email VOCAL-KY: info@vocal-ky.org https://www.vera.org/publications/the-criminalization-of-poverty-in-kentucky Sacrifice Zones is hosted by Stretch and airs weekly on Sundays at 11am, Mondays at 8am, and Tuesdays at 2pm on Forward Radio WFMP-LP Louisville 106.5fm and livestreaming at https://forwardradio.org.
