You may have noticed we removed our Land Acknowledgements from the opening of our pod. We are making changes to how we approach land acknowledgements, that represent our current understanding of Indigenous Sovereignty and how to show up as meaningful accomplices in Land Back efforts and initiatives.

We are always striving to show up and listen, learn and commit to action. This was sparked by a powerful conversation started by Relentless Indigenous Woman on her socials. Yesterday, May 5th was MMIWG2S+ awareness day - Call to Action 41 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission states: "We call upon the federal government, in consultation with Aboriginal organizations, to appoint a public inquiry into the causes of, and remedies for, the disproportionate victimization of Aboriginal women and girls. The inquiry’s mandate would include: Investigation into missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. Links to the intergenerational legacy of residential schools.

The AFN and the AFN Women’s Council released “Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice: An Action Plan to End Violence Against First Nations Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People” with recommendations in four priority areas:

Justice: address barriers and inequalities in Canada’s justice system

Human security: ensure equitable access to basic needs, including shelter, food, and education

Health and wellness: provide services and programs that are culturally appropriate and trauma informed

Culture as safety: make cultural identity a priority in all preventative, supportive, and healing activities
